help with 4x4 low range!!!!!

I have just bought a 1991 explorer and everything is pretty much up to par except 4x4 low range 4high works great but i cant get itto go into 4low any suggestions???

you putting it in neutral first,then 4x4 hi,then 4x4 low and at a stop?or the motor may be bad.you can remove it and manually put it in

thank you i did a little research and came up with exactly what you just said i'm leanin towards the motor but 4hi still works so i guess i'll start with the shift motor this is my first 4x4 and im already head over heels for it so im not going let this discourage me
