1998 ford explorer xlt
my father has a 97 ranger 4x4x and im gonna do the clutch and replace the slave cylinder. Is it necessary to remove the transfer case or can i leave on.

No reason to separate the two, except to make it lighter to lower the trans down. If you're using a trans jack, you'll be okay. If you're muscling it down with your arms, separate them.

Hi Pkeddy,

When I did mine a couple months ago, I brought it down as one piece. However, I decided to split them up for reassembly. I discovered that the tranny alone was much more manageable than the combined assembly when guiding the transmission into place. The weight of the transfer case kept trying to rotate the whole assembly as I tried to line things up.

Yes that helps a great deal considering ive run into some problems already. Like getting the down pipes off and having to remove the manifolds to get the bolts out.
