hi guys,
i have a 2000 model UR explorer 4.0lt , (thats what they are called in australia)
when the car is running the air con clutch keeps engaging then disengaging even with the switch in the off position, it also does this when you try turn the air con on, i am thinking it might be either the switch playing up or the relay that runs it playing up,

problem is my explorer didn't come with an owners manual and i have been trying to find a wiring diagram of the power distribution box to know which one is the ac relay, all the diagrams i have found for a 2000 model explorer don't match up to mine.

can anyone help

cheers

Umm.. Is it on defroster by chance? Usually when its cycling on/off on the compressor frequently, its a sign of low charge on the AC system. You can go here for a manual. Dead Link Removed

Hi Tonkas;
You can find some A/C guru's at this site:
http://www.autoacforum.com/index.cfm?NoCookies=Yes
All you need to do is go through the usual join procedure.
After that just post a thread pertaining to the problem and you will receive very knowledgable A/C advise :thumbsup:.
Good Luck;
Rick

Having the same issue with my 2000 ex. Had any luck in diagnosing?

just guessing without the benefit of reading pressure gauges either too much or not enough refrigerant. It takes a certain amount of pressure to satisfy the low pressure side switch and too much will cause the high side pressure switch to disengage the clutch.

Just barrow a set of A/C gauges and note both sides during cycling and with engine off. I will admit at this point that I am not good at metric to SAE conversion.

The low pressure (in psi) should be about 1/2 the ambient temperature degrees (F), ie. 40psi on a 80deg F day.

The high side should be about 2-1/2 times ambient temp.

Static pressure (system off) should be slightly higher than equal to ambient temp on both high and low sides.

Good luck.
