Help with after market CD player

I have been and around here long enough to know, but I still have a basic question regarding putting in a multi CD player and a97 Exploder with prem radio. I read:
"Important!: Quick Reference For Audio Forum "

I still think that I missing something:

Can I put an over-the-counter (Sony JCV etc) multi CD player which will utilizes the existing radio faceplate controls?

I know there's an adapter on the existing radio but I am not clear whether an (or any) over-the-counter player can be hooked up to the thing.

I'm not looking for a fancy system just a decent player. I get the impression that just buying a Ford changer makes your life simple.

Any thoughts or comments and\or any ball park price if I have to go the "Ford route" would be appreciated....or does someone have this licked?

www.autotoys.com has OEM compatible CD changers in the mid $200 range. Crutchfield also has a changer that works with some factory Ford systems, but it will set you back over $300 for the changer and cable.
