i put the cheap monroe hd shocks on they were $20 a piece at oriellys. they are a little soft for my taste. one thing though, if your having a bad ride quality make sure that your ball joints and bushings are in good shape.

What purpose do you use the X for? You want off road? towing, HW & regular daily driving?
I've had rancho's, pro comp, bilsteins, Each had their own pro's & cons for ride quality.
Right now I have the Monroe Reflex. I'm pretty happy with them. I do only local regular driving. Nothing extreme. They ride decent & no problems with handling.

How long have you had the Monroe Matics? Usually after a few months, they will break in and ride softer. That said, I have read that the Matics don't have a very good ride overall.

If you want a suggestion for good shocks with a nice ride, I'd say Monroe/Napa Sensa-Tracs or KYB GR-2. I had the Sensa-Tracs and they were excellent, gave a great ride and weren't either too firm or too soft. Excellent for the Explorer. KYB GR-2's are a little firmer and more sporty. I've since gone to Bilsteins, and while they are firmer than anything, especially with a lot of other suspension upgrades, I won't go back. If I wanted a luxury ride that still had good handling, I would have stuck with the Sensa-Tracs. I've never had the Reflex, but if you get enough positive opinions on those, they might be worth going for as the "premium" option from Monroe.
