Hello,

I am looking for some clarification of the what my code reader is telling me. I have a 93 explorer. It is pinging quite a bit, and also has this lame vibrating hum when I am going pretty fast downhill and let off the accelerator a bit. Anyways, I am trying to diagnose it and fix it up the best I can. Lately my main concern is the pinging I hear when it is climbing hills and really digging deep.

I am new with the code reader. I got a ford code reader off of ebay and it says if is for 1981 to 1995 domestic cars and trucks. I have done the KOEO test and come up with the code 33 twice. I go to look up the code 33 and there is none for the KOEO test.

I am also confused with whether my 93 explorer has the EEC-IV system or the MCU system my books describes.

Maybe some experienced forum readers could help me out. Thanks for your time.

First, you might need a new code list. My code list shows KOEO 33 as an EGR code. Of course, your '93 should be outputting 3 digit codes, so I expect that's a 33x code, unless it should be interpreted as a 111 code. You might review my notes on pulling EEC-IV codes and BrooklynBay's EEC-IV code list.

Also, regarding the pinging. This seems to be a common problem for 1st gen 4.0's, and has been discussed numerous times. Look into cleaning the MAF and tightening the lower intak manifold bolts.

What Shorty said also you can take it to Autozone and they will check your codes for free.

My pinging totally disappeared when I had the tranny shift modulator changed. What happens is the tranny fluid gets sucked up into the vaccum lines when the modulator is bad. Check your vacuum lines to see if they have fluid or are very soft.

When was the last time you changed your plugs wires and cleaned your air filter? I dont think those are your problems but with our older vehicles it pays to stay on top of the preventive maintanance.

I'm good on the air filter and plug wires. I stay on top of all the general maintainance but, everything else is pretty unknown to me. I will look into the shift modulator deal. Thanks.

If you don't have ATF in your vacuum line going to the octopus connector, then the modulator should be OK. AutoZone only reads codes for OBD-II vehicles, so they wouldn't be much help in this case. Here is my thread on 2, and 3 digit EEC-IV codes: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160035

I had quite a tiame figureing out the codes on my 93 using the jumper and the service engine light. I finaly determined the 1,1,1 1,1,1 is a pass for COEO test. You need to run the COER )Key on Engine running) test to get the information about what might be causint the pinging.

My autozone reads OBD-l . I go to them everytime I get a CEL.
