I just got a new head unit to put in my 96 explorer sport. I took the faceplate out and the factory radio. I got a dash install unit from Metra called the Metra 99-5027 single din install kit. I got it at Advance auto parts. It says its used to fit my explorer. from 95-2011. I used a metra install kit on my 97 ram and it was perfect. I dont get it. it is way too small. the instructions only tell my how to mount the dash kit to the radio. not the vehicle.

IMO, I think this (click link) would have been better, but I have a tendency to be brand loyal. I've installed a few stereos in a few different vehicles and Scosche has never let me down. Looking at the dash kit you got, you should be able to screw it in at the top, or use the attachable mounting plates to attach it on the sides. Now remember, I'm not saying you can't see the obvious, but I haven't seen a second gen radio swap...I have a first gen and it was as simple as, take the old radio out, make connections and install the new stereo...they're both single DIN, and I'm guessing second gens are double DIN.

In reading this thread, it sounds like the mounting kit should snap into the dash, but again, I haven't worked on a second gen radio before, so I'm not exactly sure.....got pics of the dash and the kit side by side?

Hope some of this helps...

the 2nd gens are double dins. i swapped in a single din with a kit and ended up having to cut some of it. i will send you pics after school.. it was retty easy actually.. my single din now has a "pocket" below to store my phone wallet or ipod or whatever.. i plan to put a double din in soon though with dvd navi blutooth and all that good stuff

Thank you! it clips in!
