I have a 93 explorer with a automatic tranni, and a manual 4x4 shifter. I have not run the 4x4 for about a year. It has been sitting with the wheels unlocked and in 2hi position.
I decided the other day to check it before winter sets in. Locked the wheels and shifted the 4x4 in 4hi. As I pressed on the gas the vehical slowly moved foward, but the real problem started when I tried to turn. The stearing started to shake and made a jumping feel. I don't know if I did something wrong, or if the 4x4 has gone bad.
Could someone please give me the 411 on how to use the 4x4 if you think that is the problem. Or if you think it is a mechanical issue, where should I start replacing parts at.

If it is any help, the shifter inside the truck is making a squeaky noise and was making the noise before I did the expirement.

Thank you,

Nathan Jensen

Welcome to the forums!

If you're using the 4x4 on pavement or other high traction surface, some wheel hop while turning is normal (this is hard on the system FYI). Try engaging 4WD on a loose dirt or gravel surface.

Proper engagement procedure is to lock the hubs (unless you have autos) and put the case into 4Hi. Works best from a stop. Expect 4WD to engage within a very short distance, often with a noticeable/audible clunk. I think you did it right, it's pretty hard to screw that up. However with the manual cases finding the sweet spot between 2Hi and Neutral can be tricky and must be learned. 4WD will not lock in or the case will fall back into 2WD if you haven't got the shifter in the right spot. Try to feel the gate beneath the shifter.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, if the steering wheel wobbles like you have really bad ball joints, then it may be the u-joints...I replaced them and the problem stopped.

Now if I can just figure out why it won't engage anymore, I'd be golden

Wow, I have only heard that Explorers had manual T-cases. I have never seen one. That is cool man, Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the help

Hey guys, thanks for the help. I think the artical on the 4 wheel drive helped also. It was an eye opening expirience. I will now have to rethink my set-up.

Again, it was awesome help. If anyone has any questions about 4x4 wheel drive. the link in this thread is absolutely helpfull in many ways. I know I am probably telling people how little I know. But, that is why I am here. Too learn...
