Hello all. Thinking about putting a sub in my 96 explorer. I have the factory premium sound system with factory amplifier. I was wondering if i can wire my sub to the pre-existing amp. Thank you !

Does your sound system have a factory subwoofer?
If yes, you can wire a sub to it, but don't expect any super strong bass.
If no, then no.

It's better to run your own amplifier anyway..

Like DjDom said its best to run a seperate amplifier, with its own power (with an inline fuse), ground, remote and rca. If you have a factory amplifier then you could use the remote wire from your stock stereo for the new amp. But Alot of stock stereos dont have rca/feed outputs or a remote output wire. Most aftermarket stereos do.

The factory 5v remote wire in my 96 would not trigger my aftermarket amp. The PAC OEM-1 high-low converter I used changed it to 12v, and my current AudioControl LC2i also changed it to 12v.

It does not have its own subwoofer. I have my own sub and am going to purchase an amp. Now i need help on hooking the subs and amp up, etc. not too experienced in the electrical field

Pretty easy, get a good amp and sub that will work together. Pick up a good wiring kit, and then it's straight forward. Tons of vids on youtube, Ground it properly too. Most problems are from bad grounds.

Yeah as others have said, the electrical part is the easy part! Make sure your sub and amp will go good together in terms of ohms law and what you plan on wiring it at and how many subs and what kind of box and what kind of music your going to mainly play etc etc.. lots of little things that make a big difference.. 80 percent of how your "system" sounds is in the details of your install, and not how much money you spend on a sub and an amp. Good wire and connections will go a long way and save you a few head aches too!

This. Trust us when we say it. It's a huge headache when you're wiring i not good enough for the job. We've all learned this the hard way.
