My 99 EB started "flaring" between 2nd & 3rd gear last weekend, worse when going uphill (you actually have to back out of the throttle to get it to hook up when climbing any incline). Other sypmtoms are it seems to go into O/D sooner than it did, and sometimes when it "flares" it feels like it's actually downshifting into 1st instead of trying to go to 3rd. That afternoon when driving about 35 - 40 after coming off the freeway, the O/D lamp started blinking. When I restarted, the O/D lamp never came back on - and still has not since. However, when heading back home coasting up to a stop light, the X "bumped" pretty hard a couple of times (a "missed" shift?). When I pulled into my (uphill) driveway and parked, (Trans shifted into P, then foot off the brake with engine running) I noticed another clunk type of noise just as I was shutting off the motor. I started it back up, put it in D and pulled forward an inch or two, then put it in Neutral to let it roll back it felt like it was either in Park or 1st gear.

The truck just turned 109K miles and the last fluid filter change was probably about 30 - 35K ago. I did recently tow my tent trailer about 400 miles round trip to go camping.

As I said, the O/D light only flashed that one time and has not come back on but I have not driven it since I last parked it either. I have an "ACCUTRON" OBDII reader borrowed from Autozone but it doesn't come up with any codes. Does the computer store the transmission error codes or are they gone once the lamp stops flashing? Do I need a specific reader? The "local" tranny shop (15 miles away) advertises they will read the codes free, but I don't want to drive it over there if I don't have to and cause more "problem$"!

Any ideas as to the problem? What readers will pull these codes? Help!

Thanks in advance!

Any OBD digital code reader will get transmission codes...Mine is an OBD II 3100 , you can get it at just about any parts store...It will probably give a code for a "transmission solenoid" but it didn't specify wich one... Good luck

Thanks Richard, I have an OBDII reader, but it shows no codes. One thing I want to find out is if the code is not stored in on-board memory, or does it disappear when the O/D lamp stops flashing?

codes

The codes are usually stored in the computer unless you clear them with the OCBII or disconnect the battery. Did your check Engine light come on? If it did the codes should be stored in the computer if not... they may not be in there.
