2000 explorer spo Utility
I have a 2000 explorer with automatic transmission. When i get up to or around 40 mph it seems to buck or joint but after get pass 50 mph is goes just find. I check the transmission fluid and it's right where is got to be. I check it running and not running and its right at the spot it got to be. it's like it drops out of gear then right back in. I have no check engine light on. I know the abs wheel sensors are bad all 3 of them and both temps sensors are bad too. The abs sensors on the bad works off and on. My friend plug his abs scanner in and took it for a drive and the two front ones ain't putting out nothing and the back one it putting out a signal off and on. I don't know if the abs sensors work the transmission too. For the last month we had the suv it's been working find this just started a few days ago. Well thanks for the help i can get.

I think the back one feeds the speed signal, I would get that repaired ASAP, it is cheap.

ok but does it tell the transmission when to shift. My speedometer work find. I know when i step on the gas it won't downshift right. Then out of the blue it will downshift take off like it should.

Yes, the PCM uses the speed sensor(rear ABS sensor) to control the shift timing. That VSS is needed for the trans, it goes from the ABS sensor, to the ABS module, to the PCM and speedometer. The front ABS sensors are unrelated to the trans, they are for ABS only.

Ok I get one for the rear abs sensor then. Drive it after it warm up outside above freezing and it work great. It didn’t buck or nothing.

I'd check the CEL codes with a reader too, even if you go to a parts store to have them check it. You want to know the transmission is alright. It is reliable, but with age it may need a little TLC to avoid having to let someone rebuild it.

I know in 2014 they rebuild the transmission. But I have them check it. Does the rear abs sensor work the auto 4wd system too.

Not really, the GEM, TOD, and 4WD modules control that, monitoring the speed difference between the front and rear ABS sensors. If the tires are not the same size, or a sensor is bad, the 4WD will not work right, light on etc.

So it is fixed?
The speedo can filter a small drop in signal, you may not see it, but the trans may get confused.. That is why scan tools are important (and knowing how to interpret what you see).

not fix yet. i going to get a new one when my wife get paid. it seems to work better when it gets above 35 outside. when it was acting up it was colder and snowing outside. my 94 ford f150 i use to have the cruise control won't work until it got above 40 outside. so i figure the rear sensor may not work right on the explorer below 35 degree outside.

In the past many had issues with it.

well found out that it ain't the transmission it is the spark plug misfiring. Number is misfiring and it's misfiring because it's missing the covers in the wheel wells and water and crap it getting on the engine and spark plugs. On dry days wear the road is dry it runs great but if i hit water or mud or even snow it will misfire and buck. The spark plugs and wires are new but covered in mud and dirt so it the side on the engine. I got the plastic up in the wheel wells but on down to the frame i don't and i can see what i am missing. So i got to replace that and hope it helps.

In the older days, we used to put a zip tie around the boot of the plug to keep water and such out.
