Hi Gang,
I need your expert help again please...
Today my '97 Explorer Sport 4.0 SOHC 4x4 (110k miles) started to spew Power Steering fluid. I limped it home (regularly stopping to top off fluid) about 80 miles.
I don't know much about PS, but I think I'm about to learn.
I've isolated the leak to one of the metal lines. I'm not sure of the path of the fluid to and from the pump, or the components involved, but I'll try to describe...
There is a small distributor block sort of thing that sits just above the front suspension, driver's side. There are 4 lines that plumb into/out of this box going to and from the resevior, pump, steering, etc. Two lines go to the steering. One line appears to go through a little tiny cooling finned thing then up to the resevior (or pump), and another line goes to or from the pump (or resevior). The exact paths I'm not sure of as it was kinda dark.
Anyway, at least one of the lines connected to this distributor block seem to be leaking at the joint where they are screwed in. I think it's the line that goes to the little cooling thing. Everything is wet now, but with the motor running, I can see a clear stream of fluid. It deosn't seem to be a hole in the line, but coming from the threaded joint. Everything is rusted and looks like a bear to remove. I can bearly make out a nut to hook a wrench to. The thing that seems most difficult to me is that it is all (in)conveniently tucked behind the front stabalizer bar. Access doesn't seem very easy at all, if any.
Does anybody know what I can expect or have experience with what may be leaking and what I'm in for trying to repair it? Can I even get to it without dropping the suspension?
Thanks in advance for your help.
