I did some searching but couldn't find what I was looking for. I have an 02 2wd with a 4.0 sohc. I just replaced the engine (did timing chains before I dropped it in) and while it was apart I put in a rebuilt transmission. I bought the truck not running so I have no idea what it was like before hand. It runs and drives great now, however one thing it does puzzles me. It seems like it defuels on shifts, but right after it goes into 2nd gear there is a slight hesitation, then it kicks back in. It does it at all throttle positions. It doesn't feel like there is any slippage, just feels like the fuel is waiting just a second too long to come back on. Any ideas?

I drove it with the exhaust open after the cats and its definitely a fueling thing. At WOT, after going into 2nd it gets louder about a second after the shift along with the power coming back. Is this a normal characteristic? Can it be adjusted? I'm gonna try cleaning the MAF sensor this weekend and see of that does anything.

Probably just a weak solonoid pack in the trans. Any codes? I haven't driven a 5r55s/w that shifted completely perfect to be honest. I have drove at least 200 of them by now

No codes. Its a rebuilt trans. I don't know how many miles are on it though. It seems to shift perfectly fine, no slippage or hesitation going into gear, its after the shift that it hesitates. Do these partially defuel on shifts? Feels like it. Its just that once its completely in gear it feels like the fueling is taking just a bit too long to come back to full fuel. I can try to get a video.

Ford has torque management. It does not de-fuel. It retards the timing like crazy. They do this for a smooth shift and to help their transmissions.

Is there any way to adjust it so the timing goes where it needs to be right after the shift rather than a full second after it? Without buying a custom tune. Is it normal for it to take that long?

I'm sure a tuner can make it shift snappier. I know my girls truck seems to power back between gears. Hers is an 04 4.0 sohc and I assume it's just the electric throttle body closing a bit.

You can only adjust it a little. For years people have been wishing Ford would allow the disabling of torque management.

Nope. Go read countless forums that have already covered every bit of what torque management is and what you can do with it.

That sucks. Guess I'll live with it as is then. I'm getting used to it. It'll never feel right but I'll manage is suppose.
