hesitation??

This has been going on for a few days. I did a search and didnt find anything relating exactly to what is happening. My ex idles roughly and hesitates when stopped at a light or in park. I also feel hesitation or kinda like lerching action when driving at higher speeds(25-65mph). It almost feels like it wants to stall but never does. Anyone have any advice on what this might be?

good question. sometimes, when i start my truck, cold or warm, it idles around 500 really roughly, then stalls. i have to fight to keep it alive. when this is happening i get seemingly random surges of power. ive tried to narrow it down a little bit, but i cant figure out what's happening. any help would be awesome.

thats how mine is when idle. It will never stall out thoug. It will just idle at 500-700

I have a somewhat similar problem....

you name it, ive replaced it. I've used lots of junkyard parts, used ebay parts, etc, so it hasn't been too expensive.

no luck so far.

there's a thread on here somewhere with all of the stuff that i had replaced. Since i wrote it, i've replaced a bunch of other stuff. It is really pissing me off.

i've got hesitation in mine too. mine only really occurs at full throttle or going up hills on the interstate. mine idles fine. im goin to check out the fuel filter and see if that helps anything. i might also try that TPS sensor thing and see what that does. ill tell ya if either of these help or dont.

Cool. I need to get sparkplug iwres but dont know what kind to get and spark plugs also. Fuel filter I may change out as well to see if that helps

mine does this sometimes when i press the gas pedal quickly...it waits then goes

once in a while when i go to start it, it won't start...i wait a few minutes then it will, i don't understand it.

don't know if anyone has the same problem, but an answer would be great!

It seems my problem is the mass air sensor. I got one off ebay, and now it doesnt hesitate, but it pings sometimes insted. The one i got off ebay is really crusty, even after cleaning, but it changed the symptoms, so i'm pretty sure thats the problem.

after a tune up and all the obvious stuff, try the MAS.

What I would do is the following:
Check your air filter. Replace it if dirty or clean it if it is a K&N.
Clean the MAF sensor, there is a write-up on the main page.
If that doesnt work, change your spark plugs and wires if they are old. This really improved the hesitation in my explorer.
Change the fuel pump. It is not very expensive and is fairly easy to do with the right tool.

If you do all of these and the hesitation is still there you probably have a vacuum leak and it can be hard to track.

On a side note, do you go wheeling your explorer? I am thinking about putting together a local run in early January and just noticed you are in ABQ. Give me a PM or email.

You might want to take it in to a dealer and see if they can pull a code on the PCM. My brother is a Ford mechanic and he's always talking about having to replace the IAC. Don't ask me what the IAC is, "Idle air controller" I think,...just something you could ask your dealer mechanic about. Take your MAS off and spray the crap out of it with some brake cleaner.

Replaced my MAF today with a remanufactured one. The truck runs like new. This seems to be the end of a year-long problem.

If there is no check engine light on, there are no codes to be read.

Sorry, that's not true. If the problem went unchecked the pcm will store some codes without a "check engine" light. Some codes are stored without any initial "check engine" light.

It applies to my truck, a '92. I don't know about yours. If the light never came on, then nothing is stored.

I recently ran into a very similar problem with my '94 X and here is what I did to fix it.

One day while driving down the road my X started sputtering and lurching as I would go down the road. When I got to a stop light the idle was all over the place, ranging from 300 to 1200 RPM so it either almost was stalling or trying to run me through the intersection. The check engine light came on and then turned off. I knew the ECM had thrown some codes so I stopped by AutoZone to get the codes read for free. The codes indicated a failure in the Throttle Possition Sensor and the EGR valve. The AutoZone guy recommended both along with the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. I went home and replaced all three but the problem didn't go away. After about a month of jagging around with this (Including a day last at the Ford dealer) I finnally found that if I removed the connector from the IAC the surging stopped. The idle would not kick up when a load was applied like AC being on but at least it stopped surging. I did have to turn the idle up a bit because it was too low without the IAC's help. I eventually bit the bullet and ordered another IAC from the Ford dealer and the problem was fixed. Sadly enough I nailed this problem on the first day but the crappy IAC from AutoZone completely hosed me. Not knocking AutoZone but I will be more selective on the type of parts I buy from there.

Try disconnecting the IAC to see if the erratic idle goes away. Sorry for the long winded reply but I hope this helps.
