2002 Explorer Sport Choic
Hi there!

Growing up my family had so many bad experiences with Fords that I swore I’d never buy one. Fast forward to a couple months ago, I needed something affordable with cargo space that could tow, and all the nearby trucks were out of my price range. Pulled the trigger on a well-maintained 2002 Sport with a high trim package and lowish miles (143k) and have been really happy with it so far. Very easy to do regular maintenance. Been gradually fixing up all the quirks and am looking for tips on preventative maintenance to keep everything in good shape for the next 100k if I can.

I’m pretty handy and know how to fix all kinds of things… computers, houses, electronics, guitars… cars are sort of next on my list. I’ve done oil, filters, transmission fluid, spark plugs, but I’m starting to dip my toes into the heavier stuff.

Welcome to Ef! Smart choice
Your 02 sport does it have the rear mono leafs? My first upgrade would be 4 door rear leaf springs, manual chain tensioners and lube the door hinges
Sport doors are very long and the hinges wear out… keep those suckers lubricated!

Ford is a smart choice
All domestic manufactures were crap in the late 80s early 90s lol not just ford

Thanks for the tips! Previous owner just had the suspension done like 6k ago and it looks like it already has 4 leaf rear suspension so I guess I lucked out there! I just lubed all my hinges and latches with silicone oil the other day and put some lock lube in all the door cylinders because they were all frozen. Still having some issues with the doors “bouncing back” when I shut them, not sure if that’s because the latch positions need to be adjusted or if they’re just really sticky still.

The idea of manual chain tensioners makes me nervous, I’d be afraid to adjust them wrong and shred the chain guides, but I’ll
look into it.
