I just installed a new Surco safari Rack on my Explorer and i want to purchase a Hi-Lift jack, and Mount it on my Safari Rack, but can't find any type of brackets for mounting it to my rack, I am not sure if the Hi-Lift "4xRac" will mount to the Safari Rack. Can anyone steer me in the right direction or have some pics of something personally fabricated???

Check out the Conferr web site. www.conferr.com
Look under Roof Racks!
Scroll down to Custom Rack Attatchments, then Hi-Lift Jack Mounts.
They Sell the Brackets and the Adapters needed.
I bought them but after looking they seem very easy to fab! They also sell the Shovel & Axe holder. But once again they also seem very easy to fab!

BFGorilla,

Either Hi-lift Jack bracket will work. May not be pretty, tho. I was thinking of moving mine (4XRAC) off he spare tire carrier up onto My surco rack. Some minor fab'ing might be necessary to get it to mount up nice and tight. The one thing I like about the 4XRAC is you can put mini padlocks on each bracket to keep the neighborhood vandals from running off with it!

I bought the Surco Axe/Shovel brackets and I really like 'em! You just got to be CAREFUL when taking off one tool that the OTHER one doesn't come flying off with it! I removed my shovel, and the darned axe slid off and knicked the top of the roof on it's way down to the ground!!!! My wife thought it had cut my foot off, the way I was screaming at it! She came out, saw me cussing out the axe in my hand, turned around and went back into the house.

WOMEN.....sheesh...LOL

I would think that the standard HiLift Loc-Rac would work perfectly in this application. Am I missing something? Any reason why not?

Thanks for the ideas guys, hope you keep them coming.
JamminG4Jim~if you move the 4XRAC to your Surco Rack take some pics, i am curiuos how you will mount it>

Gerald~ I keep staring at these pics online of the Loc-Rac and 4XRac and i just can't picture in my mind a way to mount or even fab piecs to make them mount to my SUrco Safari Rack. If you have an idea or another post you can lead me to, I am all ears, er... uh... eyes i guess

Thanks again guys, I ordered the 60" Rack today with the vinly bag and bumper lift attachment. Hope the idea for mounting it to my Surco Rack will keep coming.

You might try mounting the 4XRAC to a metal plate that you could bolt to the Surco Rack! I ordered the Brackets from Conferr. Stupid me I didn't order the Adapters.

What do they say live and learn. Well I'm learning to live like an Idiot. I'm coming along quite well!

Tim, go to a 4wd shop and look at a Loc-Rac and note the mounting holes and envision how it attaches. You will see that the two pieces bolt on via two bolts spaced horizontally about one inch apart on each piece.

The rack you are buying will be Surco's S4550 safari rack with the CH100 adapter. It has the dual horizontal aluminum frame rails and three gusseting spacer plates on each side that are about five inches wide.

I would think that it would be no problem to drill into the lower rail where the back spacer plate is (using the plate for extra strength) to put the base Loc-Rac on. Then use the middle plate to install the Loc-Rac section that holds the handle and stem of the HiLift. Looks like a slamdunk to me and about a ten minute job.

I plan on buying a Surco, and that is exactly what I am going to do when I get it. Once I buy it, if the aluminum looks too frail to hold the heavy HiLift while bouncing on the trail, I'll simply use a strip of plate steel on the backside of the Surco plate to strengthen it where the Loc-Rac bolts onto it.

Dead Link Removed

The only thing I could see that you may have to do is beef up the rack somewhat and make sure the brackets will it. Other than that... get out the drill and go for it. The two other holes are for the lock rack. I had that but didn't like it. The 4x4 mount also has some small holes in it for a small lock, but it just doesn't come with it. In my mind the 4x4rack is the better of the two.
