Hi all, I am a new member. I have an 03 Mountaineer AWD with 98K. This morning the wife was leaving to work; when she placed the truck in reverse it seemd as though the driverside rear wheel was semi-stuck and make a loud popping noise. It does it in drive also, and only does it at a certain point (not constant). Any Ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

You might have a frozen brake caliper in the closed position, locking up the wheel on the driver side rear brakes or your parking brake on that side is grabbing for some reason. For starters, take apart that brake hardware and check everything out including pulling off the rotor and checking the parking brake as well.

Welcome aboard USAF150!! :salute:

I was also going to suggest checking the brake caliper/pads & the parking brake shoes.

Hope this helps out. :D:thumbsup:

Please keep us posted as feedback helps others reading this post looking for a fix to the same or similar issue!

Welcome USAF150! You still in?

I just had the same problem.... Ended up being the e-brake shoes. Just take them off and leave them off. Unless you plan on using your e-brake alot.

That would work until your "state vehicle inspection" is due. At least in New York State, working parking brakes are a "must have" to pass the inspection. I can't say what the law is for parking brakes in other states. I find parking brakes useless on Automatics and in all the years I have driven, I have "never" set one unless it was to test it prior to the state vehicle inspection. There are ways to bypass the state vehicle inspection and get a new inspection sticker if you think your vehicle will fail due to some problem, but that involves "greasing the palm" of a mechanic you know fairly well. This of course is something I have heard about from others. ;)

Haha I am from Nebraska, so the inspection consists of a guy walking around it and then asking if it runs....

I am required to have have the parking brake here in order to pass state inspection as well.

The only other items in the wheel that would make a noise while moving is the wheel bearing might be going out or the cv joint in the axle is going bad. I am just guessing and brain storming.
