Hi: I am just curious, can headlights on the '99 Ford Explorer possibly be installed backwards, or upside down? The reason I ask this is simply because my Low Beam lights are two or thee times brighter than my High Beam lights? How might this be corrected?

Either you have something wrong with your hi-beams, or you need to replace the high-beam bulbs. I'm not familiar with 2nd gens having lighting issues like this, so hopefully someone who does can chime in.

The second gen uses a single bulb with dual filaments for low/high beam.

I highly doubt your low beams are brighter than the high beams. If so, get new bulbs..

Yes my Low Beams are definitely much brighter than my High Beams. The High Beams have adequate distance, but I can barely see the road. Using Low Beams only, I have a much better view of the road, but not the distance.

Are your lights adjusted (aimed) properly? How does the headlight lens look? It's still very possible you need to change the bulbs and maybe aim the lights down if they are aimed too high.

I've owned my Explorer for 7 years and have put over 120,000 miles on it (has 180,000 miles on it now) and I'm still running the same bulbs as when I first bought it. They still work decent, but I'm sure replacing them would provide a noticeable increase.

DJ:

Thank You for the advice. I will try these suggestions, and hopefully find a simple solution. The lenses look good and clean, but I will try to give them a good cleaning. I am uncertain of the light adjustments, but will check that possibility also. I will post again when I try all of these, (including changing the bulbs if all else fails) to update you on the results.
