Has anyone put high beam bulbs in place of your low beams? I've seen it in other forums but not here. It should only be a matter of filing down the nubs in the bulb to fit. Do you think 10w difference is anything to worry about on the wires?

Never heard of this...

What's the project? I don't know if we could do that in CA, people would flash you all the time... Interesting idea though. Anybody do this before? How's it working?

It shouldn't be a problem, just have to reaim the headlights because the beam pattern is probably different.

On the East Coast...

You all don't get people flashing their lights at you with that type of conversion?

I see about 30-40% of all vehicles on the road with lights which are too bright. Sometimes I blast them, but like most, usually you just take it and do the best that you can. It is inconsiderate to have two and more extra headlights/"fog lights" on that are of headlight quality brightness. All OEM "fog lights" are not fog lights. Real fog lights only extend about 150 feet, and only illuminate the ground, to not reflect off of rain/fog/snow back to the driver. All OEM "fog lights" extend out far away and into oncoming driver's eyes. Those are driving lights, they should only be seen by no one. If another vehicle sees them, they should be turned off, just like high beams.

Why ???

You have low beams and you have high beams, just flip the switch to get your high on, is there something I am missing or are you going to use two High Beam bulbs ?

If you want more light how aboubt the Driving Lights on while the highs are on, that is easier to do with the wiring and if necessary to put back the way it was.

Help me out here, Please ?!?!?!?!? :confused:

The theory is that the reflectors are are aimed differently. I was thinking of using 2 9005 bulbs on each side. The difference should be more light using low beams and the higher angle of the high beam reflector would still provide the high beam effect when used. The mod looks to be simple - just file the 2 tabs off the inside the bulb end of the socket and install. As for the aiming... that'll have to wait to see kind of thing. The lights are aimed the same just the light is a bit brighter. Either way the whole mod will cost $15 - $20 so if you don't like it you haven't wasted lots of money. And you have spare 9005 bulbs. I'll try this tomorrow is I can get my butt to the store today.

the gen explorer's we both have have very good lighting for north american specs...

what bulbs are you using?

why don't you just buy the HIR bulbs?

but yes you can put 9005's in your low beams. you will need new sockets for best results.

i have them for sale.

HIR = $60
9005= $20

Simple Math.

Why would the socket make much difference?

I've got the bulbs. Will try to get it done tonight if the rain holds off. I'll take pics.

there is a physical difference between the 9005/9006 sockets.

you will still need to replace your low beam 9006 socket with a 9005 one, do you understand what i mean?

I haven't held them side by side but is there something more than the alignment tabs?

Alright, Finally got around to doing this. The result? Nothing earth shattering. The mod is super easy but the 25 degree weather was tough on my hands. I took some pics but they were a complete failure. Anyway. I do have more light and it's mainly a fuller light on the road. No one has flashed my so the light isn't super annoying to anyone. This was done with simple replacement 9005 bulbs. You would probably see a greater improvement from Silverstars or other upgraded lighting. All in all it was a good cheap mod. I like the added fullness to the light near the truck. It's almost like having another set of fog lights.
