High gear shift flare.

I have a 1999 Ranger 4x4 4.0 L. This problem has just started to appear.
I noticed when at cruising speed (approx. 55 - 60 MPH) and attempt to floor the accelerator to pass, the RPM will go up to 5500 and the transmission will not shift down until and backing off of the accelerator. The oil does not appear to be burned. The fluid level is up to normal range on dip stick. The transmission does not slip and shifts fine otherwise. The mileage on the truck is 118,000. No work has been done to the transmission since purchasing the truck at 100,000 miles. No engine lite or codes. Any areas to look first for problems?

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmission section. Check your bands. You might have a broken band or a band that is not torqued to spec.

After reviewing a few threads, I understand the bands on the 5R55 are located on the outside on the driver's side and there is no band for reverse. If a band is broken, I am assuming I will find out when it does not torque down. What is the torque procedure and settings of all the bands to make sure I don't screw up the tranny.

From what I am reading, the 5 spd transmission I have may either be a 5R44E or 5R55E. Is there a way of knowing short of taking the trans apart? The vin is 1FTZR15X6XPB87965.

The 3.0L has a 5R44E & the 4.0L has a 5R55E.

I haven't had a chance to dive into it. Got other fires to take care of but know what I have to do.

Shift down flare Update
I re-adjusted the 2 bands as described under the sticky threads and it did not solve the shift down problem.
In an effort to re-iterate the problem to make sure the problem is fully understood, I will update the transmission performance issue. If I have learned anything, properly defining the problem is half the cure.

At cruise speed (approx. 60 MPH) with overdrive on, press the accelerator slightly down to pass, the transmission will shift down as expected but if I floor the accelerator, the shift down will not happen and the engine RPM will flare up to approx, 5500 RPM. At that point, if I ease up on the accelerator and floor it again, it will then shift down as expected. The problem issue is consistent each time I do it. Reverse and all other shifting operations appear to work as expected.

I am wondering if there is a problem with the VB such as the activation sequence depending on the gear it is in of the solenoids?

Additional information found after pulling the transmission pan.
The fluid is definitely burned. Approx. 1/16" thick of metallic sludge was found on the magnetic strip inside the pan. Also found 2 small aluminum round disks (0.136" dia x 0.073" thick) in the pan.

i have a 2000 ranger 3.0 2wd that does the samething im in the same boat you are. i also have engine shake.

BB when you are on again, would you respond to what you think is going on with this transmission what the parts are?

You might have to rebuild the valve body, and replace the 2 servos on the side of the transmission.

Do the sticky threads cover the 2 servos in detail? Any ideas what the parts found in the pan? I actually found 10 instead of 2 disks when cleaning out the pan.

Those are pan spacers left over from the rubber gasket. It sounded like it might be the spacers when you said that there were 10 discs in the pan. I didn't want to jump to any conclusions without seeing a picture first.
