High Idle

The truck is sitting at the house for now, I haven't been able to get into it because of work and the shop is closed during the weekend, so i'm going to clean as much mud off as possible and then take it back tot he shop, the first cylinder is what killed the truck the first time, but it was still firing sometimes, but now it's not firing at all, don't even have a check engine code for it though, it has fuel, and it now has oil, it almost ran out due to an oil leak that I thought had been fixed, reopening. The other cylinders will run fine though, and we've replaced all the spark plugs and wires twice in the last year.

I got into the engine, took apart the air intake, past the air filter, it was completely clean, but the spark plug in the first cylinder showed mud inside the cylinder, we replaced the plug and tried starting the car, it takes a few minutes to get all 6 cylinders moving, one at a time, and then the car needs constant gas until it can idle on its own
 






So a guy showed up at my house where the truck was sitting asking if it was for sale, when I went over to put the air intake back onto it, I started the truck up to see how it would do for a test drive, it runs better than ever, the check engine codes for my ABS, vaccum leak, and IAC valve are all gone, I drove it over 100 miles, got it up to 80, and it runs better than it ever has before, I don't know what it did to its self.
 






What is "mud"? Seems like it might have an intermittent head leak. If it was running (I mean the problem fixed properly, which it doesn't seem to have been but still...) when it returned from the mechanic, which we can only assume, there should have been no further buildup in the cylinder.
 






Fast forward a couple months, I still occasionally drive the truck. Something in the first cylinder likes to eat spark plugs, it stopped firing again and when I checked the plug it was corroded to hell after only 3 months.Put another plug in and everything is normal. Got a code for the camshaft position sensor, just unplugged the sensor and cleaned it off and it worked fine again. Everything is normal in it without really any work. I bought a new coil pack for it but one of the torque screws stripped out immediately so I have yet to get the new one on. Almost forgot that something blew in the catalytic converters. I started it up after driving one day and it literally sounded like rocks were being thrown around inside them. Got under the truck and it's the only place the sound was coming from. After about 2 weeks the sound disappeared. Quite a bit of black dust came out of the tailpipe though, Going to have a mechanic check the cats out this weekend, plus during the estimate I found out the shop that rebuilt the engine left the entire exhaust system hand threaded together, after tightening up the bolts there was a small power boost but it still has to be floored to get to 80 and gets right at 15.5 mpg average in all conditions, nothing better nor worse.
 






My AC compressor is blown but all my windows work, plus instant heat on start up and heated seats is great for this winter, something is pulling on the fuse for the rear windshield wiper and heater, I'm thinking an open relay because the motor has never worked right, possibly the relay bit the dust or the motor is pulling too much power.
 






You could unplug the wiper motor and see if the fuse still blows, and run a fused test wire to it straight from the battery to see if it works then or blows that fuse too. Possibly that goop in the cylinder made its way enough to the cats to damage them. It shouldn't have been ran any more than necessary before the shop fixed it.
