Really depends on the maintenance record. These days the rest of the components of a car will disintegrate before the engine stops running, but that's assuming regular maintenance and tune ups occur. If it was the ecoboost then I'd be weary of high mileage, but if it's a very clean 2011 limited, I think it'd be ok. Have a trusted mechanic check it out and give his opinion.

I wouldn't buy it with that level of miles on it for 22K. Considering you get worse interest rates for a used car and no incentives you are in essence buying a 27-30K truck depending on your loan rates and available incentives.

That is a lot of money for a vehicle with that level of miles and wear/tear on it. IMHO anyway

As 13Sport pointed out, see if you can get a copy of the maintenance records. According to the Owner's Guide, at 100k the engine coolant should have been changed along with the spark plugs. It also calls for having the accessory drive belt checked. At 150k the transmission fluid and filter should be changed. At 100k I would think that the brakes have already been changed at least once and may be due again. Check the spare tire wheel well for signs of water/moisture. Some of the Explorers developed leaks in the roof and the water would run down the 3rd row seat belt and end up in the well. Also make sure that the plastic funnel is there. That is the only item you can use to help fill the tank if you have to add gas from gas can.
The dealer just talked me out of my 2011 Limited with a year left on the lease. They paid off the $5600 I still owed and the buyout was $19,100 after 4 years.
I'm sure they bought the vehicle from Ford so that meant they likely paid $24,700 for it and the mileage on it was only 11,000 miles. I'm guessing that they will likely ask around $28k or more for it.
Depending on what the maintenance records show, I think I might try and talk them down some more if you really want it.

Peter

You can get a 2011 Limited with low to mid 30k miles coming off lease for $27-$28 if you shop around. I'd save up a few more grand or spend it if you have it and go that route. If you are financing, the difference should not be too much for piece of mind and cost on repairs/wear and tear items compared an EX with more than three times the miles.

Thanks guys for all the help. my issue is that i live in the Bahamas. a new x limited here is $70,000 due to custom duty rate. Want a limited but of course the lower the price the better for me. but also will have like my post says the high miles is what has me. this x is on carmax site and they say its value max certified. don't know if that makes a huge difference or not.

Well that pricing changes things I guess. Lol

I assumed there was some import fees involved, your best bet is to have a trusted mechanic look at the vehicle for you. They will be able to assess it's condition and whether the mileage has done any sufficient wear that will cost you down the road. The price seems reasonable (US blue book value is ~19k if the vehicle is fully loaded)

Ouch. And I though Cuba was bad with imports.

The positive is that you won't be putting a ton of miles on it due to being on an island. All Carmax tells you is no accidents reported by police or insurance. If somebody scratched the paint on one side and did not report it but had it repainted, it could be a bad paint job that may be blended well so you can't see it but the clear goes in a year or two. Also, it takes months for an accident to show on Carmax and people who have a repaired car from a pretty bad accident will often sell to a private buyer or trade-in to a dealer before it shows on Carmax. That's why you should always have your mechanic go over before purchase. He can tell if repairs have been made, new paint, etc.

One thing about the Ex being a newer model is you don't have a lot of people posting here to tell you how well their 100k plus miles 5th gen. Ex's are holding up, but the way they make cars these days they do tend to last much longer than cars did 20 years ago.

2011, you must be kidding. Way too many miles. Way too much money. Don't buy someone else's trouble and problems. The 2011's, first year of the 5th gen Explorers, have had plenty of problems.....research this Board and you will see that this would not be a wise decision..........best regards Plum

Actually, buying a new model car that is three years old is not a bad thing in my view as the original owner had the warranty work done to get the kinks out. Assuming the car is solid otherwise, you get a car in good shape as I did with a 2011 with 31k on it I have had for just over two months. I also don't put a ton of miles on my cars, so that also helps. Heck, I never had to deal with the MFT problems either. I'm perfectly happy with MFT 3.6.2 and that is all I have experienced - except one reboot on my MFT as it was two versions old when I bought the Ex, but three days into ownership I flashed to the 3.6.2 and not a prob.

Still, I personally would not pay over $20k for a car with over 100k miles on it. I have a method I use catching used cars off leases that have been serviced and taken care of. I prefer to buy used so the original owner eats up a big bit of depreciation, buy in the low to mid 30k miles and hold on for as long as the car lasts. Others like a new car every few years where leasing would make more sense. Me, I am fortunate to be able to pay cash for decent used cars and have no car payments. I just prefer to be debt free in case hard times hit. That's why I live in a modest house that is technically a lot less than I can "afford" --- I have no mortgage and own outright. I also consider myself fortunate and I don't have kids, which helps.

Don't forget that where the OP lives a new Limited is $70k so that would affect the used car prices as well.

I agree. He is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Not sure how I would go about it on an island with outrageous fees/tariffs/taxes on imports.

I still tend to think I'd buy a vehicle with fewer miles for the same price, and it obviously would not be as nice as the Ex in that situation, but to each their own... I respect how anyone goes about buying a car and I respect what they buy. I have my way of doing things, but that is by no means right for everyone or anyone else.

Wow, I thought I had the most miles here on my 2011 Limited with just over 107,000 miles. I better get bizzzzy.:)

Your right tmg19103 a rock and a hard place. Trying to get a limited for as cheap as possible to keep the duty rate as low as possible and also want a X that's in great condition. Hey bill, how's your X holding up after 100k miles.

113K in just a few years on the island, that thing must have been driven all day every day to rack that up!

I would pass and keep looking for something else, though it doesn't sound like you are going to find a ton of better options.

If you do decide to buy it i'd make sure all the basics like tires, oil, brakes were all changed very recently or else you'll be even further in the hole down the line.

I'm not sure on the maintenance intervals on all of these, but for the timing chain on these, it's in the time frame i'd expect it to at least be inspected. Transmission fluid probably needs to be exchanged, spark plugs replaced as well. All these MX costs would add up very fast!
