High Mileage EXP/XLT

I have a 92 Explorer XLT with 388,000 and still going strong. No problems ever, I bought it with 112,000 6 years ago. I have decided to keep it and want to install a K&N filter, exhaust system, etc. What kind of suspension mods I need for off-roading?

Holy God thats a lot. You could go stock off roading, but nothin to major. If you wanna go big, then a 5.5 from superlift would be a good choice. There are many many companies that build suspension mods for these rigs. Easiest way to fimnd ema is pick up a fourwheeler magazine and you have a plathora of info and prices for those kind of lifts.

With 388k, that thing will break at the thought of off roading.

is that original tranny and engine build also..... if it is hats off to ya... im working on 250,000

Everything is original. I use 100% syn engine oil, change the filter and oil in the tranny last year. I do some off-roading and I have 31's and want to change the gearing, because I notice it a little slower then before. Any suggestions? This Exp doesn't get scare at the thought of off-roading!

How do I find what gearing I have?

there are codes on your driver side door that say axel and then you use the owners manual to find out. i had 3.08 gear ratio i now have a 3.73

Do these numbers apply to both axles?

The number for the axle is D4, I can't find my owners manual. Anybody knows what this mean?

yes the number applies to both axels

limited slip is good for street application its kinda like a clutch for a transmission. when the wheel slips the clutch impacts on another and it brings the other wheel into action. but they only last about 70000 miles so i think yours might be shot. alot of people have locked rear ends. and your 3.73 is good for 31s but any higher and you will want a lower ratio such as 4.10 or more depending on how serious your off roading persuits are. I on one hand dont do much so having a lower gear ratio wouldnt make sense hope this helps. also do some searches thats how i learned most of this stuff.
