Nice good luck on the engine...

I've heard that the timing chains are a ***** to fix up on explorers, my mechanic telling me.

well after she's all fixed i'll try to let ya's know how she is ,,,i sure hope they put a new engine in ,,,,the place i bought it from is a pontiac dealer ,but ive purchased new cars there many times ...this truck i bought used ,,,,ive had it almost 2 yrs & everything has been fine until i started it one morning & it sounded like a diesel ,,or squirells chasing nuts in a can ,,,,,,i reallly hope i get a new engine :D:cool::thumbsup::thumbsup::us:

After having one out, and apart, the hardest thing about changing the timing chains is pulling the engine out.

thats where theyre at with mine right now ,,engines already out ,,they told me that the price to fix the timing chain ,,is about as much as a new engine..i'm not really sure but i know there is a front chain & a rear chain ,,i just hope the adjuster for the warrenty co . tells them to go ahead with the new engine ......has anyone ever dealt with AUL ,,,,THATS THE WARRANTY CO ,,, I HAVE

about 175K. bought with 124K, fixed the shift flare a few weeks later. 10K on the track-lock swap. about 20k one the first and only tune up. timing chains rattle like crazy but i dont push it so im not to worried.

I figure at 200K i'll let it go and trade up to something cool like an FJ cruiser (sorry) or maybe a late crown victoria or gran marquis. I drove my brothers the other day and didnt even feel like i was driving. He's got a link to some lift kits (haha!) so you can fit stupidly large wheels under it, but i figure stock wheels with taller meaty looking AT tires would be better look. too bad it isnt a wagon, but i have an idea to fix that...

205k and some change on my 97 Ex Sport

170,200 Miles On My 1997 Eddie Bouer Explorer With A Rebuilt Engine.

Curious as to the mileage of the sohc's v6 Explorers here. I have 185,350 miles on a stock all original 1997 XLT and still running like a champ. Any other high milers out there?

203k still runs excellent, with the exception of the shift motror which needs replacing.

I have a 2000 sohc Explorer with 20,889 miles (I bought the car new) and the timing chain makes no noise yet! I guess I have a ways to go, huh? Better start looking for a replacement before 50,000 miles.

I've got 97000 miles on my '98 Explorer XLT. I've owned it for about 6 months now and drove about 3000 miles on LPG. I changed the sparkplugs and sparkplug wires, the oil (replaced the 10W40 with the prescribed 5W30), replaced intake manifold gaskets and IAC-valve (last was not necessary in retrospect). Also 4 new tires.

So I've got it all covered for a while!

I've had my '96 XLT for 11 days, 800 miles and its been great! The last mile to my house is a shared private drive that suffered from rains last month and after 12" of snow 2 weeks ago became impassable with anything but 4X4. The previous owner racked up 215,000 miles and I have no idea what kinds of repairs were done in the past. It is running strong and I look forward to getting many years of service running our road and taking it 'down the ocean' on the beach at Assateague Island National Seashore for surf fishing (cann't wait for summer).

205 k on my 04 XLT V6
tranny is okay but delayed shift out of 1st when cold
also missing over drive most of the time
new wheel bearings brakes and tires, fuel filter in the last year and one half
tranny fluid and filter change at about 140 k
i only do small stuff myself like oil change and plugs and did the alternator and sepentine belt last fall when it went

Question: What other stuff can i do or inspect that is easy and cheap?

I love 0 car payment but if the tranny goes i am getting rid of it - too many other small things
dk

my 96' has 142k... still running good no problems
