I am a new member to this forum and the 4 day owner of a '95 XLT 4X4 5-sp with 73K miles. Let me say this website is invaluable!

Now to my question....at least once everyday upon starting the engine, my oil pressure gauge (yes, I know it's only an idiot light in disguise) will go way past the upper end of the scale indicating at least to my brain, extremely HIGH oil pressure. No other symptom, no idle problem, no engine noise, etc. After a few minutes, the needle moves back into the normal mid-point range. I have also notice that the needle will do a little dancing while driving. Nothing major. After reading all the past posts on the subject of oil pressure, it appears they all are refering to LOW pressure, (makes sense). Anyone else encounter the situation? And what may be the problem and possible solution? New oil pump? Sending unit? Oil gremlins?

Thanks for listening.

it could just be the angle of your truck in relation to where th sensor is. does this happen on hills or just on flat ground?

It has happened so far only when on level ground.....

on my 94 the guage has gone nuts and bounced from the H to the L several times then went to where it usually sits (around the al of normal)then twiched a while and now its new home is on the lower side of normal. and i am experiancing no abnormal sounds or performance losses. so i dont know what the hell is going on but it makes me kind of worried.

One suggestion to think about if you are concerned about your oil pressure, is to go out and pick up a manual oil pressure guage and install it. Or check out the pressure with a master guage and confirm that it is fine. It does sound like the oil pressure sending unit may be faulty. Try contacting your local service department or call up a shop and see if they have a master guage on hand and could check it out for you.

I hope it proves to be a faulty guage or sending unit for you.

I.M.H.O.,

If it were a faulty sending unit it would probably trigger an error code and a subsequent check engine light. It is probably a faulty gauge or a short somewhere between the computer and the gauge. When I get home tonight I’m going to look this up in my Helms troubleshooting guide.
