I am looking to remove my stock exhaust system and put on an aftermarket one. After some research I am coming across 3 main types (flowmaster, gibson, and JBA). I am curious on which one is a good choice for my '97 ford explorer. I am interested in HP and fuel efficiency gain, also a nice tone.

Which is a good choice?

Best advice is to put one or both of the SEARCH tools available at your disposal and scour the archives. Your queries are some of the most asked questions on the site. EF has been in existence almost as long as your truck so you'll find LOTS of info (been there, done that).

Make sure to distinguish between engine type (4.0L V6 OHV, 4.0L SOHC and 5.0L OHV). All three engines available in the 1997 Explorer sound different, especially with custom exhaust. There are a LOT of opinions on what is best, but only you can decide what is best (based on sound) because performance is similar with most well known mufflers.

Also try Youtube. Lots of vids on there which will give you an idea of what to listen for.

Good luck and welcome to the site.

1 vote for Flowmaster.

I have a 4.0 OHV with a single in/single out Delta 40 with 2 1/2in piping and a 3in tip. I gained 2mpg's combined, and 3 more on the highway! Not too loud, not too quiet, until you punch it. It has an aggressive deep throat tone with a bit of rasp in the higher RPMs (>3500rpm) but I will never regret putting the system on. By NO means is it 'Ricey'

I've been meaning to do a video recently...

Thanks

I appreciate it.. thanks for the help and advice.

I narrowed it down I think. After a little research between noise and performance. I am gonna go with the JBA. Its got a 2.5 tube diamater with a single side swept exit. Its performance is pretty much like the rest of them and after looking at some videos it seems to be almost as loud as a flowmaster which is what I want.

I would go with the flowmaster but the stainless steel feature with the JBA is what helped me make my decision for my 4.0L SOHC.
