High speed wobble, not ball joints or tie rod ends

I sold that truck several years ago, and I do remember the new tires made a huge difference.

i have a 93 explorer 4wd and i have the same high speed wobble. I have had an alignment done and all new shocks front and rear. My wobble occurs around 63mph and up from there to nearly 75 or 80 witch is crazy to drive that speed with the wobble. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ford Explorer Wobble

I still havent fix my vehicle as yet. I have changed all four struts/shocks, balljoints and front stabilizer links and the problem is still here. I took it to a shop last week and the mechanic told me that the problem was my front wheel bearings. He wanted to charge me $600.00 plus, which I currently dont have therefore, I dont know if that is the fix. Good luck, I hope you find your fix.

Wow, I'd change out your front bearings for $500 :D
I had to do one of mine last year because the bearings came out of the race, when I pulled the seal off the bearings fell out but the race had to be pried out.

Honestly bearings do not cost a whole lot, replace the seals as well, grab some grease and you can be done with in an hours time if everything goes fine. I have always done this with my butt in gravel, so you do not have to have a garage. It's not hard and even the off the self manuals detail the process.

If I were going to do this for a friend, just for my time I would ask for $50 and that does cover all parts, seals, and grease. I'm still using the same tube since I have repacked the bearings four times now since September of 2009 in my explorer.

Hope this helps you some, sounds like that shop is trying to rip you off. I would recommend, never going there again.

look at the tire tread. if you dont rotate them when you should they will develop bumps along the outer part of the tread. you wont really notice them driving around town but once you hit freeway speed you will feel the wobble for sure. if youve already had an alignment and the steering wheel shakes at freeway speed, i think that might be your culprit.

Have you or any of the shops checked the axle pivot bushings?
If they are shot it could lead to all kinds of slop in the front suspension and bad feelings while driving.

Old post I know but I had this same problem on my 93. What it turned out to be was the Bog O tires coming apart from the inside. They could balance them but at speed and with a load on them it felt like it was uncontrollable almost. After changing wheel bearings doing a front end alignment and other part checks. The tires had over half there tread left but I finally went and replaced them as Big O would not stand behind them. Well problem went away right then and there and I have never bought Big O tires again.

Many years ago I had a set of firestones the first ones that they recalled for blowing out and or separating. I got them used for $50 and one day at 70MPH the front one separated and took out the front fenders big time. Well firestone gave me a new set of tires and also paid to fix the fenders and repaint my truck so I was happy in the end and lucky the only thing that was hurt was the truck and no person. But tires can do some strange things and not be seen or shown up in balancing them or even in dismounting them or remounting them
Just some FYI for later
