Hello,
This problem has been bugging me for a little while now and cant really find anything on the internet that is exactly what im looking for and hoping someone here can help me.

I drive a 97 Ford explorer 4WD 4D xl

Heres my best explanation on what is happening,

When im driving on the highway and come to the down slope of a hill,if i dont keep a steady idle on the gas pedal and just want to cruise down then when my RPMS drop below about 1800 the RPMS will drop right down and a weird noise from under the hood starts and sounds like something spinning/reving real fast, but as soon as i give it a touch of gas it seems something catches then everything is fine.

This also happens when driving around 60 - 80km and let got of the gas and want to coast, also when im slowing down to a red light or a stop sign. i have had to master the art of breaking with the left foot while keeping an idle with the right :)

hoping someone here can help me with this problem so i know what to go and pick out of a part truck and throw in

thank you very much for your time

That would be a bad transfer case. It's only a matter of time until the gears stick in neutral never-never land and you're left stranded on the road side from it (or can't back out of a parking space).

Run a search for 'shift rail bore' in the trans, t-cases, and differentials section. here will be plenty of info there. :)

Fixed????

Rigger did you ever get that problem fixed? I am having the same problem and no one and pin point the problem.
