You could just buy a K/N Filter. If you put a custom aftermarket, it's gonna be big bucks with a MAF and everything else, and I don't think you are going to get that much more Horsepower for the buck. A better solution would be to investigate the different computer chips available, but that's a conversation for another forum. Just my two cents.

You could try something like this:

Here's what I did though:
I got a MAF to Cone Filter Adapter
5.0L MAF (but I put the Explorer's electronics in it)

All in all, I've yet to spend 50 bucks. I feel that the stock tube is good enough for now, but with the wider MAF there's more airflow, and my mileage got a boost mainly on highway driving.

Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about:
Cone/Adapter:

Just Adapter:

These may now be exact parts, but you should get the idea.

the stock piping from the mass air to tb isnt really a restriction. the mass air is the restrition. so upgrade to a bigger meter with a k&n filter replacement drop in an you will probely notice a difference. if you want more 1/2 shaft your tb also.

Questions on MAF ugrade

I have seen several different size MAF housings for the 5.0, there are 55mm(stock), 60mm, and finally 70mm.

Could I simlpy get the biggest one and then purchase a K&N filter and piping and be done? Are the MAF's internal electronics the same? Thanks!

save yourself some money an just buy a mustang 70mm housing an put your stock eletrontics in the mustang housing. just buy a stock replacement k&n filter. also half shaft the throttle body there is info here on how to do that.
