Highway speed surging

When driving down the highway the rpms will go up to 3000-4000 rpm and drop back down. I am on flat ground no grade. It even does this on decline with cruise on. I have had it do this with cruise off and o/d off. Does it moreso with overdrive on that not. Checked fluid not burnt but looks over full. I don't know of an accurate way to check fluid. Everytime I check it on anything I've had it's always been way up the stick. Any help appreciated any questions I'll try to answer. I did have new tires put on about 3 days ago. Anyone, please help.

First off... welcome to the site

Second... you only posted 5 hrs ago and most of us work during the day and dont drop everything to answer questions. Be patient, and if someone has value they can add, I know they will.

Third, did you use the search function - It can be your best friend.

Finally - sounds to me like a speed sensor. My father had similar symptoms on his 96. Cruise would surge, spedo needle would fluctuate..Not sure where it is on a 3rd gen, but its on the trans on a 2nd gen.

well mine did something like that a few times, i found out the thing that seperates it from drive and what is below it (cant remember if its 2 or N) was kind of broken/bent, so it would go inbetween and go into nutral and i hit it and it went back to normal, i just jiggle it up and down before i drive to make sure it actually is all the way in drive.

Sorry, I get a little over anxious. I did use the search function and it came back with a culmination of issues that sounded like mine, in various aspects of the issue. But I saw nothing that described solution to the specific symptoms that I ran into.

So, I decided to write a post that described my issues specifically.

Sporadically drops to 4th gear, then back up to 5th on the highway after driving highway speeds for about 20 minutes.

Just wondering if anybody had the same issues.

Mine does it around 50 mph. The tach will go up about 500rpm or so then back down. Does it intermitantly but seems to be doing it more often. '04 4.0 XLS
