I just got new subs and I understand that all subs sound different but these seem to be more hollow sounding and it seems as if they are rattling. I think it may be because they are not screwed in tight enough. Any other suggestions as to what may be causing the hollow sound and the rattling?

if i knew what you meant i might be able to answer, be more clear about what you're hearing and when you're hearing it

What subs do you have, I can't tell if they are the Lightning Audio subs from your sig, but if they are, I have not been hearing anything good about their sound quality. But what do you mean by hollow? Like is is too boomy or......

Okay, I will try to explain it the best I can.

Every time the bass thumps instead of being a solid bump with power and vibration like I used to have it is a less solid rumble and right when the bass hits it rattles like it was hitting someting causing it to shake. I don't know but it sounds a little more airy like maybe that is causing it to not hit as hard.

By the way they are Lightning Subs (good call!) but I had some before that sounded fine...Maybe these new ones suck

I hope that helps if you need a better description again just keep asking!

i dont know, this may help...read on

1. you aren't supplying them with enough power

2. the enclosure is too large and they can not move the air inside

3. defective subs

what he said is basically the only things I can think of that wrong. If it's sounding airy, then your encloser is to big or maybe to small which is probably making it sound hollow/distorted. But you made it sound like your speakers sounded like they were clipping also, you may not be supplying them enough power which could make them sound like they are popping/rattling.

Or yeh, you might just have blown subs or they came defective.

are your gains down?

could be an air leak. Push on the sub, if it pops back up really fast your box has an air leak. The sub should slowly return to normal if it has no leaks.

Also check to make sure that the sub is flush with the box. If it isnt air will leak out. What i did was shred up some paper and stuck it in between the crevices and no more air came out. Also is your box ported? Make sure that the ports are flush and have no crevices otherwise they will leak too.

What are the dimensions of the box and what type of wood is it made of?
