Hood scoop!

Alright, so I figure I already need to get stuff painted.....so why not go ahead and work on my hood before I get the fenders painted?

4" cowl induction. I'm still looking at other options.

thats good b/c then the whole thing gets painted and you wont have as much of an issue not matching the black exactly, just on the doors now, I think that is just what splat needs

looks good. 4" isnt too tall, as a buddie of mine has one jsut about like that on a Tahoe and it is not annoying at all. you gonna have it molded in, or just use the double sided tape? or sheet metal screws?

I was gonna use tape, nuts, and bolts.

I need to do some measurements and see if my hood is flat enough to accept that scoop. I'm planning on just cutting holes between the hood braces, and putting a fine mesh under or on top of the hood where I cut it. I might also put a wider mesh in the scoop itself.

I don't anticipate this to be too hard. Take the hood off, measure really well, cut, and put the scoop on. Put the hood back on and go to the paint shop. I think tape and a bolt each 8" or so should do it.

They all look ok I say do whatever you feel looks the best. None of them are stupid so make yourself happy, no one but you is paying for it

Alec, you are going to try to blend it into the hood right? Not just look screwed on.

well, I suck with bondo and other similar things. I was thinking about just using exposed bolts. they will be painted black.

fiberglass repair kit.............very easy to work with.

Where do you get that, Autozone? And will it bond the fiber to the hood?

Have you looked at the hood that Troll makes?

Another way to attach is with pop rivits.

I put on the lund scoops (pair) and I had them painted and then I installed them with the tape(not gonna be safe enough for me) and also rivets. I have gotten lots of compliments on rivets and I wouldn't worry about molding unless you were going to do it very very good. I installed with hood still on the truck, just made it look like graph paper with masking tape before I cut any holes to make sure it was dead even.

Not going to try blending: bolts or rivets + tape. Troll's hood is too expensive. I've decided with a pure cowl scoop, not one with front and back. Also I need to watch the length of the scoop, the X hood actually seems pretty short.

But: pointed backwards towards the cowl. It's 28" long, and the "power bulge" of my hood is 35-38" long, so the scoop would start about 1.5' from the front of the hood, accounting for contour, etc.

Yes, I keep changing....

Took some more accurate measurements and it seems that the scoop needs to be less than 20" long front to back to look decent. That would start it about 2/5 up my hood and end it at the end of the "power bulge". This one looks promising (remember, backwards):

There are some smaller cheapo scoops out there, but they're just that, cheapo. There are also some that don't raise above the hood, they just act as more of a moulding around the cut. Those may actually reduce my hood clearance, and wouldn't be as noticable. They also tend to let more crap into the engine bay.

So I'm leaning towards this one now

Have it put on using 'real' rivets, not just pop rivets. They look a lot better, they have smooth tops instead of a place where the end breaks off.

I just ordered it!

I finally decided on the last one. $115 with shipping. shipped USPS, so 7-10 days; but I don't have time to install it before then anyway. I'm probably gonna go with bolts and nuts, I like that look and it's easy. I may smooth the edges into the hood a bit, but I think the bolt heads will look good.
