Does anyone know what the strength (in lbs, N, etc...) of the hood supports are? Mine are shot and a friend is getting rid of some sets that look identical (length, OD, attachment type). i can have them but I want to make sure they will work!

explorer hoods are not real heavy.
Either way the hood shocks are super cheap OEM and even cheaper after market.

well, I tested a few and believe it or not, it took the strongest one you could get in that package to work correctly. The gas springs I ended up using were 130 pounds of force each!

SHOBrad, do you have the manufacturer and part number to share? I need to get a set put on ours but want something that will work without having to worry about the hood coming down on me.

I have a hood support rod now, I haven't bothered to replace the struts yet. I realized it was a problem when I was working in the engine, then after I took my head out, and was by the grill, BAM! I guess my old ones don't hold up in cold weather....

I'm just a little gun shy now. So I just use my support rod. I really need to replace the shocks though.
