Horn Beeps On Exit

Don't worry, soon the beeps will go away and the car will shutoff if you get out with the Fob in your pocket. People are too distracted to remember to shut off their cars, so a class action lawsuit has been filed.

If that ever comes to be, I can see people hiding an additional fob in the vehicle.

The reason for this is there have been several cases where someone gets home and leaves a running vehicle in the garage and injuries/death have occurred. It is more prevalent with hybrid cars because they may be on electric when getting home and the person fails to shut it off and then because voltage gets low, it kicks over to the gasoline engine.

There was actually some news articles floating around on this about a month ago. Of course there were/are lawsuits but in my opinion it boils down to hey...shut your car off if your not coming back to it. They have to blame someone and unfortunately it is the automakers.

This is why we have the double horn honk.

Yes, but the weird thing with my ex is that it only double honks if my wife gets out of the passenger side first and closes the door with the engine off while I am still sitting in the car on the driver's side with the key fob...

Guess they want to make sure she doesn't forget me!!

I didnt read all the comments and I get there is a safety issue related to this.....However, I was thinking its the car also letting you know the engine is running and now its sensing No key in the vicinity. Therefore, if you get back in without the key, and drive 50 miles and turn the car off......Well, now you are sccccccrrreeewwwed. I always thought that was the reason.....

Still no ways to turn this off? It does bug me because I do get out of the car alot to run back inside. And if its late, its loud and waking people up

If it is you that turned the vehicle off and then recalled you don't have the key, you can restart it using the Fast Restart option;
The fast restart feature allows you to restart your vehicle within 20 seconds of
switching it off, even if it does not detect a valid passive key.

When existing the vehicle at any time with it running, you can prevent the horn sounding by not fully closing the door. It's that easy. I do it all the time when stopping to pick up my mail from the street side community mailboxes.

What would be nice to know is if someone that has an export model of the applicable model years that does this here in Norht America also does the same......?

Omg make it stop!

Ok I just brought my 16 Exp Limited 4wd home.. And I was yelled at by the daycare for waking kids up with the stupid double honk. I know it won't do it when I leave the 2nd fob in the vehicle but really? Just leave a key in a $50k vehicle at all times? Can't the insurance not cover u if u leave the key in the car and it's stolen?

I traded my 2013 BMW M3 for the Explorer. It didn't make a peep when I did the same thing.. But it would just shut off after 15 Min of not having the key fob within range

What can we do to stop this madness! It's my only complaint.. I love the Explorer.. I love it more than the bimmer if that is believable.. But this honking needs to stop

Welcome to the Forum.:wavey:
As far as I know there is no way to disable it without disabling the horns them selves. What I have mentioned several times is that I don't completely close the door if I have to just hop out for a minute or so. That solves the problem.
BTW, the Explorer will also shut down after a period of idling time with or without the fob in the cabin. This 'shutdown' time can be adjusted and even turned off temporarily. It's covered in the manual.

This is the issue that's driving me nuts too.

Pulling into driveway, shutting off vehicle, and while driver with fob sits in vehicle the passenger gets out and double honk sounds. That cant be a safety feature thats gotta be a bug.

I totally get the honk when the driver with fob exits vehicle running and goes out of range.

Seems leaving a second fob in vehicle won't solve this it's a bug.

I agree. Not sure why the horn honk when the passenger gets out. I've had that happen as well. Annoooyyyying.

Checkout post 117. The passenger honk has to do with how the system views the status of the car being lock vs unlocked.

BTW - this is the same behavior in Lincoln MKZ and other FoMoCo products with the remote key.

Also, I saw on another post somewhere on this site a member had bought a diagnostic tool that got into the shop programming (I think for turning on and off DRL's), in the pictures there was a horn option. I wonder if there might be a way to change the behavior on one of those programming screens.

JMR061 would know if using the IDS tool could change this setting, I dont have that expertise or IDS knowledge.

Jason is this a possibility?

This horn honk thing is F'n nonsense and drives me crazy, sure you can leave the door closed & not fully latch but the passenger getting out and honk honk is ridiculous. Double honks always happens when you least expect it, early in morning, late at night...at times when the neighbors would be annoyed or when a pedestrian is walking in front or close to the vehicle startling them too. The least Ford could have done was a chirp, chirp instead of a full out honk honk.
A simple off delay timer would solve the whole thing.
I think I'll hide my second keyfob somewhere inside the vehicle if that will solve this issue.

I dont think the 2nd fob inside will work as the driver already has one in the vehicle but I will try that today. Maybe having it in the console "slot" may be the trick.

A known work around on the 2014 Ford Escape Titanium is to hold the FOB against the B pillar when closing the door. It does not honk. Try that and let us know if it works.

Can someone with a 2016 that has a keyed ignition confirm if this feature exists for them?

In other words if you leave it running with the key in the ignition does it double honk if the driver gets out and closes the door?

I am guessing no Jason, but if I am wrong, the next time I am in Wisconsin, a Steak and Beer dinner is on me.

Kindly,
Soames
