Horrible Gas mileage

SOmething's messed up... I just got 22mpg in my craptastic one with a failing trans lol

I get 20 percent better mileage than my 6cyl 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee auto full time 4wd. Prob the same as everyone else. Get at least 20mpg. I never go over 3000rpm and drive around 2ooo rpm when driving straight and level around town. I don't leave it in gear typically when going downhill. 5spd helps I am sure. My A/C does not work. Have not used the fan or heater yet.

My 2000 5.0 AWD gets right at 14 around town and 17 on a trip.Mind you I have no idea what the plugs look like and I drive it like I stole it,A/C on and no fooling around at takeoff.

I have a 1996 v6, 4 door explorer. right now i am getting around 10-11 mpg. Is that what these suv's are getting? i am constantly refueling. And is there anyway to make it significantly better.

I didn't see this mentioned. A bad oxygen sensor will cause you to get crappy mileage, stumbling all sorts of things.

The thing is the check engine light will not always come on.

Those old one wire $20 Bosch O2 sensors used back in the 1980s were easy to check with a multimeter. If they bounced from 0 to .9 at idle it was good. I don't know how to check these newer sensors with four wires coming out of them.

My dad had a 93 BMW that would missfire in the lower RPMs but the mileage did not seem to suffer and the check engine light did not either.

The check engine light came on my Subaru awhile back but the engine didn't run any different.

I replaced the O2 sensor on a FIAT X 1/9 and the fuel mileage went from 25 mpg to 35 mpg.

On my 1997 Ford Explorer Limited V8 My mileage is terrible, and has always been terrible. The last 4500 miles I drove = 11.8 MPG. I replaced the oxygen sensor, don't carry any extra weight and drive like an old guy.

When was the last time you replaced plugs and wires? Also get a can of BG 44K and add it to a full tank of gas to clean injectors.http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html

This stuff works.Tire pressure,32-35 psi,fuel filter and air filter.Try the basics first.

On my 94 I did a KKM intake and a turbo muffler,NGK plugs and new wires.My around town mileage went from 14 to 16.2 and it runs a lot better.Now this is going to sound stupid but bear with me,have a friend follow you down the 4 lane and listen when you punch the gas,does the exhaust sound like high pressure air? Hissing?

Ford is famous for using quiet but very restrictive mufflers,I can't tell you how many ford trucks I have heard go by hissing like a snake,think of it as trying to breath thru a straw.

I am **** about my tire pressure and have replaced my plugs (I am not sure about wires) fuel filter and air filter. My muffler sounds fine.
