Horrible mileage (around 10mpg)

this is my second transmission.. how many of these things should I go through?? if I hafta get another one I may hafta get rid of this truck.. I can't fork $700 into it every 6 months for a new transmission, especially since my warranty is almost up.

Last night I had to rev to 4k from a redlight just to KEEP UP with traffic.. they still pulled away from me. I don get it!! thank god tomorrows friday and I can take this thing in.. I can't take being knocked around like a bean bag by puny little hondas, and getting this horrible gas mileage to boot.

since this post started I've been through 2 tanks, 1st tank I got 200miles on it. 2nd tank 213, and I tried to take it very very easy on the 2nd tank, at one point I almost drove all the way to class hitting less than 3k rpm.. it took me forever, but I did get there. I guess thats where the 13 miles came from

200 miles per tank??
My mom's 97 2WD 5.0 gets more than twice that.

I agree that if you revved to 4K on a properly running 5.0 you would be flying by traffic.

How many miles on the truck?
Was the transmission rebuilt or replaced altogether?

61k miles on it now, just rolled over the extra 1k today, I do beleive they replaced a good many of the internals of the tranny, they gave me a work list about 2 pages long.. its somewhere around here, byut they told me they just replaced the whole thing

4k gets me up to speed by the top of 2nd gear most of the time, but I still get passed redlights when doing so from redlights

Have you tried putting the shifter in 1, then manually shifting to 2, then to D as you accelerate from a light. You may be starting in 2nd gear.........

update:

well, I took it in.. and got it back in the same day. I told them to check my TPS (throttle position and transmission position) along with change my oil, rotate tires and a few other misc. things.

well they gave it back to me not even 2 hours later telling me there was nothing wrong, and that "we had 2 guys drive it around, they didn't feel any problems or notice anything unusual"

I guess I have to fix my problems myself since my dealership won't do it.

damn straiight, go to the source of the problem yourself, and save moola $$

If I were you, I would go to a dealer and drive a comperable V-8 truck and see if in fact yours has performance issues or if your just expecting a lot more speed then it can produce. also what type of "internals" did they have to replace?? Normally those 5.0L are pretty bulletproof.

they don't have anymore '97 2wd mountaineers on the lot. and I'm sure they wouldn't let me drive one just to compare it to the one I already bought from them. "2 people drove it and saw no problems" I drive this thing every day.. I KNOW what it is and is not doing, I can't compare it to what others do from the lack of avalibility, but by saying they saw nothing wrong is like telling me I'm lying.. and I wouldn't wate my own time to take it to them.

right now I have 209 miles and its below 1/4 tank, maybe I've just never noticed this before, or maybe my mounty is just A to B transportation to me now, I dunno

As I always say (and practice myself)....when problem airse, go to a different dealer....go to a ford dealer or go to other lincoln mercury dealers. And when you go to a different dealer don;t say you wanna test drive another one to compare it to yours...just drive it as if you are looking at different trucks. Thats what I would do...at 61K there should be no problems and I still am clueless as to why they had to replace any of your engine's internals unless it wasn't cared for

they havent had to touch any ENGINE internals.. just transmission. I guess I'm just a young idiot that asks too much from a ~2ton soccer mommy mobile :( :shoot:

DO you know what I would try? disconnect your battery for a half hour, then reconnect it and drive it lighter for a while. Only rev to 3K RPM and don;t do jack-rabbit starts. Drive it easy for say 3-4 tanks and see if you get any better milage. It takes the computer a long time to "learn" your driving style. The truck will learn to shift earlier if you go easy on it.

Also did it drive the same before the tranny work?

well, yea, thats really when I 1st started noticing the problems. Right before the tranny work. Before that it was gradually getting worse . This tank it did well.. 247 miles this time :bounce:

Well, i don't really have any other suggestions other then resetting the computer and going easy on it for a while or to try test driving a similar V-8 2WD explorer/mounty and see if it feels the same.

I bought my wife a 97 Explorer with 75k on it. It is a Eddie Bauer edition. It has v-8 and awd. She gets 15 to 18 mpg all the time. And when I drive it. it gets up and goes. I think you have a problem. The first thing I would do is take your truck to a trans shop. And have them drive it. They see many trans and know what is normal and what is not, and they can tell you if it trans related or engine related. I think you have a trans problem. Sounds like the trans is slipping. I would get a second option.

but what gets me is... the shop keeps telling me "theres nothing wrong" I drive down the road barley touching the pedal sometimes in overdrive (or out, doesn't matter) and I let off the gas and the truck jerks HARD.. like.. pushes my seat forward.. I push back on the gas.. it does it backwards.. its been getting worse.. yet they tell me theres nothing wrong. Does it take me getting stranded somewhere before the dealership admits they dont know their butts from a hole in the ground??

is that slipping? what I described? sometimes I'll be driving down a road that I KNOW is smooth.. and the truck will act like its going over bumps.. I'm thinking thats transmission related too.. either that or I have a gerbil in one of my tires :P

might want to get your tires checked out. Sometimes those gerbils will jump in there when the tire guys arent looking.

I still think either that dealer is dumb and doesn't know thre is a problem or just doesn't want to deal with it. I'd still try a different dealer.
