hey guys I've got a similar question... it's time for new tires now that the snow is coming and I'm losing traction when it rains. right now I've got the stock 16x7 rims and stock size 255/70/16 tires. I looked at the sticky a bunch a times about tire size and lifts but that uses a 15x8 rim so then I searched around quite a bit and found this question. Only problem was that no one answered it the first time around...

I know that I won't be able to fit a 265/75/16 because that puts me at a 32x10.5, but will I be able to squeeze some 265/70/16 in there? That gives me about an inch extra height and half an inch width...

And while I'm at it I might as well ask about tires. I've heard both good and bad things about the BFG A/Ts and both good and bad about the General Grabber A/Ts. I do a considerable amount of driving in snow/rain/ice as I venture up to Rochester, NY sometimes and make some ski trips so snow/ice traction is pretty important... Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

someone out there has to know...

265/75/16 will fit, but with a slight lift (TT and shackles). That is the size I'm planning on getting.

I've been reading that the majority of people say BFG A/T's are the tires to get. The seem to be good in snow and ice, too, so you shouldn't have problems with that.

You can fit up to a 255/85/16(33x10.5) on the newer sports because they have more fender room than the other 2nd gen Explorers. Or you can run a 265/75/16(32x10.5). Both of these sizes will require a TT and lift shackles.

When I bought my last set of tires, they mistakenly installed the 265/75-16 instead of the stock 255/70 tires that I wanted. I didn't check before I drove off, but I noticed that the truck seemed bouncier and floated more. At first I thought it was just a softer sidewal since I went from the A/T Bridgestone Revos to the highway all-season HL Alenzas. I looked at the tire size and immediately went back to the Firestone store and told them to change to what I wanted. They didn't have my size in stock, but changed out a few days later and I'm happier with the stock size because I like how it handles. I have the 01 Sport Trac, which should be the same as the Sport, so they should fit.

If you go with taller sidewalls, it will change the handling if that's what you want. If you want larger diameter tires and stiffer sidewalls, you'll have to go up a rim size. Taller sidewalls will be better for offroad to absorb bumps. It just depends on what you're preferrence is.

awesome. thanks for the help. I'm probably going to do the TT/shackles this month while I'm on break from school and get myself some 32's. I don't wanna go bigger than that because I have the 3.73 gears and don't want to be too sluggish.

yes it works

I have 265/70/16 tires and they fit fine the only rub i get is when they are under inflated and i turn the wheels all the way to make a tight U-turn then they rub but with 40 psi they are fine
