How big can I make my recently-bought Explorer?

Hey all, I'm 17 and I just bought my uncle's 1993 explorer xlt. It's in perfect conditon but everything is stock. I have quite a bit of money saved and I was interested in getting a suspension and body lift on it. + tires. If it helps, I live in Washington and I know that you can't have more than a 3" body lift legally but I believe that there's no max on suspension lifts.

So my question is.. what's the most I can possibly lift it (that still keeps it semi-safe) and what's the biggest tires I can fit on it without problems? Keep in mind i'm trying to modify it so that it looks absolutely insane to the point where driving down the street makes people look at least two or three times :) I just don't know anything about lifts or brands or anything like that.

Hi and welcome. Search around the site and look in the photo gallery. You'll find tons of pics and ideas. I know for the 1st gen explorers you can get a 6" suspension and 3" body lift.

Also, check out Rick's explorer. I'm sure people look three or four times when he's driving down the street.

you can only make your explorer as big as your wallet, the bank, and your parents allow....
 






My opinion is big is not better. Body lifts= higher center of gravity = roll over easier.

Ask yourself what you want to use the truck for? For looks? For actual 4x4ing? For what?

I would stick a Skyjacker class III 6" suspension lift under there with some 33x12.50 tires and call it a day.

Anything over a 33 and you are gonna have big time wheel bearing problems. Also even with 33's you are gonna have to work on your wheel bearings often. 33's dont make for a fun daily driver, unless you also re-gear your differentials. Also 33's make the stock brake system really weak. See where I am going with this? there is more to lifting a truck then installing a body and suspension lift andbig tires.........

the search button is your best friend.....

Oh and with a 93 you should probably look into some serious maintenence before you go lifting it, meaning it problably needs a full tune up on the 4.0L engine, all fluids and filters changed, cooling system flush, belt, thermostat, plugs, fuel filter, brake pads, wheel bearings, etc etc etc...............
