I have a stock '93 Explorer XLT 4x4 and its time for new tires, i was wondering what the biggest size is that will fit and not rub and also what the best tire is to get within like a 100-120 each budget
if you trim the black plastic on the inside of your fenders you can fit 32x11.50. me and a few other people on this website have done it. and dunlop mud radials...i think thats what their called....are really good tires and really cheap. tirerack.com has them.
If its just all stock, go with the 33x9.50 BFG Mud Terrains. They fit stock without trimming, no rub what so ever, unless the black plastic hangs down like it used to on my driver side.. But yeah, 9.50s look fine on an unlifted X, imo at least.
31's fit stock X's & some they rub the inner fender wall on the front. Depends the X. The rears do clear though.
What are your gears? What do you use it for?
Come on Todd. Quit being a jerk. I don't think he's even broken one of the newbie rules yet: Any new member is allowed to post 6-7 new threads on any overly posted and asked about topic.
Since you want to go offroad...buy 31x10.50 Dunlop Mud Rovers. Cheap, great offroad, loud(but I don't mind em, nothing the stereo can't overpower ) and they should fit pretty easily. I've trimmed a little in the back of my plastic on the driver and passenger side. I had no rubbing on the street, but offroad I rubbed a good bit. I also have a 2" lift, so I know I couldn't fit 31s on the street without rubbing. I offroad my truck quite a bit and like to flex out the suspension when I do...so that is the reason I trimmed the fenders. I still rub when I've got the tires turned and flexed out, but that is the only time.
There's is no right answer.
Some Explorer's fit fine no rubbing. Some will rub. It depends on the X. Only way to find out for sure is to test fit. Mine rubbed. My old 94 sport didn't.
Also, you need to find out your gearing. If it's low like 3.27 you may not like the bigger tires, cause they will suck up all your power. Gears like 3.55, 3.73, 4.10 all work alot better for bigger tires.
