I have a JL 6w0 that I want to get hooked up. I built a box about a week or so ago, which I think turned out rather well for never having carpeted or anything. I just want to know how to hook this bad boy up though. I already have some wires running into the rear end that someone have previously put in, there is a power cord too off the battery that I found so they must have ran an amp. My previous X, I had this sub to replace the factory one, and I got a Panasonic aftermarket unit put in which they ended up bypassing the factory amp, so I'm guessing that it was powered directly off the HU. I believe my unit puts out 45x4. I believe it also has pre-outs. I've looked at some amps but they are pretty pricey and way to much output for my little sixer. Will I just be able to run this off the HU though? I hope someone could walk me through this because I don't know jack when it comes to audio.

You do NOT want to run a subwoofer off your headunit. At most todays headunits put out 27-30watts RMS, and this is almost ALWAYS below the reccomended power range for aftermarket subwoofers. You will get sound, but it wont be very loud, and with time could even burn the voice coils in the sub. I would try and get some type of amplifier. Even a cheap one that is putting out 100watts rms would be better than the head unit. Subwoofers are pretty tolerant of distortion up to about 1% THD. Look on ebay, you should be able to find a bargain amp that will hold you over until you can afford a good amp.

For instance this amplifier probably puts otuu a good 150-200 watts rms bridged and is only $65. Dont expect to rumble the neighbors windows with this, but youll be pleased with it until you can get something else. Hope this helps!

I agree with Fhantazm, do not run it off the HU;

This is what i would do - get a JBL 150.1, sounddomain has it for $100 and it puts out 75 watts at 4 ohms which is what you want and if you get another of the same sub then the same amp can power both.
You will also want a 10 gauge wiring kit. Total for both will be less then $150 w/ shipping and it will sound good and work properly. You will also need some speaker wire to go from the amp to sub ($5 or less)

Ok, so it sounds like I do need an amp. 150 watts is well over what my sub needs, and when I get to 100 watts it's closing in on the danger zone.

It shows that my sub has 75 watt continuous power handling. Now when looking at amps, I did see some 2-channel amps on crutchfield that weren't too expensive.

Would any of these work? I don't know about crossovers, but it seems like I could hook it up to just one side of this? Which will put out like 65-80 amps. (The red one). The sub did well enough in my EB before, and I thought it was just ran off the HU. I just don't want to spend a lot since I have most of my money going towards performance stuff, but want to use this sub and box because I have the sub already and went ahead and built a box for it.

The main thing is draining my wallet on this, since it's not a major thing for me. But I may just have to set aside some money. I just don't want this to sit around forever and need to get it out of my garage.

Edit: I was a little late on the last post, and this one is kind of repetative. But what about those amps that I showed?

The US acoustics USB-2080 is actually a good, mid range amp. US Acoustics used to a company called Alphasonik, which was a very reputable company back in the day. I know of SEVERAL people running US Acoustic amplifiers and are VERY happy with them. Plus they have a GREAT warranty. Also, crutchfiedl has a good deal on a Blaupunkt type T amplifier. This amp puts out about 300wrms, is very clean and very efficient due to its design. Its on sale for $129. Either amp will do you well.

But out of all of them, I would reccomend either the the $78 MTX that mhn pointed out, or the JBL. You simply cannot go wrong, there.

Thanks for all of the help, I think I'll have to pool some money together now and see what I can afford! I'll try to post some pictures of my box too. It's nothing special, but special to me.

Hey man, if you built it, be proud!!! Throw the pics up here, and if you need hosting, id be glad to host them for ya!

^agreed =) if u built it u are already 5-10 steps up on most other people

u should see my first sub box..the sub rng looks like a rat chewed it out and theres so many screws i think i could park my car on the box w.o it giving at all =)

just remember liquid nails is ur friend =) the more the marryer lol

I just created a car domain page, but don't have a digital camera of my own so I'll have to wait to borrow one to post a picture.

Cool! Nice truck too! Check out my cardomin page and leave me a lil feedback, if you will!

Thank you! That was taken in January I believe so it doesn't look too pretty, but it looks a lot better cleaned up. I have more pictures, I just didn't have time to post them. Good news though, I came home today and I made a comment about my sub box to my brother and just so happens that he had one lying around. It's a 100x2 amp. I think I'm going to bring it to an electrical shop to get it checked out because he thinks something may be loose in it. But after that it's going in.

There ya go! Just make sure the amp is in good shape, otherwise you risk killing your woofer along with the amp, and possibly part of your vehicle electrical system.

One of the sides, not the best carpet job, but it works!

Here's the amp the I hope to use since it was free, got to get it checked out and OKed still. But after that I'll be on my way to hooking it all up

Again it's a JL 6w0 that I replaced the stock sub in my EB with and then snagged it before I got rid of her. Custom made box, total time making it was probaly around 3 hours, which includes all the carpeting. Hope you like it.

Looks good man! And that amp will power the sub just fne.. I used to have that amp back in like 98 and used it to power a 10w0 for a month or so. It worked fine. Again your not going to win any competitions but you will get a decent sound. Good work!
