Hello All!

I recently had to replace a rear CV axle but Auto Zone wanted to know what transmission I had. I ended up ordering it from another site. Yesterday, I wanted to top off transmission fluid and the clerk asked me what transmission was in the car. I don't know!!! How do I tell what transmission is in a 2016 Ford Explorer with the 6 cylinder engine?

First - stay OUT of the zone. Their parts are garbage, and their employees are NOT hired for automotive knowledge.

Second - read the labels. Start with the Vehicle Certification (VC) label in the driver's door jamb. Near the bottom, it has a row of codes, including one labelled "TR" or "TRANS" above a single letter or numeral. My signature shows my PIU's details, including the transmission model that corresponds to this code:

There's also a label on the transmission with its PN, which you can look up.

Third - there are several V6 engine options, so that doesn't identify yours. Look up ALL the codes, and read ALL the labels so you know as much as possible when you ask for technical help. Another VERY-useful resource is the owner guide, which also explains how to ID your vehicle's parts AND FLUIDS ;) .

Transmission Fluid should be Mercon LV. It should also be on the Transmission fill cap, below the air box (where the air filter is)

it is also listed in the owners manual

I'll make it even easier.

There was only one transmission used in this generation Explorer with the V6- the 6F55.

Done.
