how do i disable autolamps?

i cant figure out how to disable autolamps on my 97 mountaineer. i have the switch on the rearview mirror but when i slide it to off, the headlights start turning on and off kinda flashing. is there any way to disable them? thanks!

I had the same problem on my 98. The slide switch itself went bad and instead of turning off the headlights completely, the headlights would flash off and on. You can disconnect the connector on the back of the mirror to temporarily bypass the auto headlights on function until you get another mirror with the slide switch. It's cheaper to get one from a yard or EBay then to try and replace the switch. Also the auto-dim function on the mirror probably won't work if the connector on the rear of the mirror is disconnected.
