I did several searches. Honest I did, but nothing seemed to answer my question. How do I interrupt the door open chime?

What I would like to do is install a switch that I can flip if I have the door open and the key in the ignition. I know that it is part of the Crown Vic Police Interceptor package, but I've never seen one to know exactly what it is.

Any ideas?

 I didn't know that was an option in the P71!! my friend has had several and I never knew, I also don't think he knew about that!

anyway I'd like to know as well, I hate the thing going on and on when I'm washing the truck and want to have the stereo on

Maybe put a switch on the sensor that tells when the drivers door is open?

I want the same thing!!! Maybe a look at a wiring diagram of that chime would help. Then just install a switch from there. Where is the chime box located??

Yeah, same here. Tonight I was putting in some wiring for a little project that I'll be showing off to everyone if a couple weeks and would have really like to have the radio on.

As for it being part of the P71 package, I might have misspoken, but I thought that along with the "dark-car" mode, an officer could also disable the door chime so they couldn't be heard as easily pulling up to a scene.

Solution 1: The simplest way is to put an on/off switch in the YE/BK (yellow with black stripe) between the door harness and the GEM (left of the radio). For a 2000 Ex, the YE/BK is in pin 8 of the largest GEM connector.

Solution 2: I have a pushbutton and relay setup in my truck that can turn off the chime in the accessory position with the door open and then automatically resets back to factory operation every time the door is closed. It is a little more work but cooler IMO. I can post a schematic if anyone is interested.

i think that's what we're looking for!!! :D

Dude no need to ask for permission! just post the schematics! haha jk, but it would be great to know how to, hope you can post them

Regards

I'd definitely like to see the schematic for solution 2. Always interested in seeing a cool mod. And if you post enough pics and it's helpful enough you might get hooked up with a few free months. Thanks in advance!

Silence the key chime at the press of a button

This is the schematic. There is more info at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=216594

I removed my door chime this weekend--(03 Explorer XLT)--I just inherited the truck from my wife and could not stand the constant noise--I like to keep the keys in the ignition--It is located in the instrument cluster (behind the speedometer)--You have to remove the cluster and then take it apart--It 1" round, black and looks like a big button--It is soldered to the circuit board---I removed it and soldered in a jumper wire--No problems, and no noise! I apologize, but I did not take pictures as I went along--(This is my first post)--If you do attempt it, be careful of the little "stops" (small ,metal needles that stop the speedometer at 0 mph)--Thet fall out pretty easily--

The earlier Explorers (like the OP's) have the tone generator in the GEM. Many newer Fords like yours have it in the electronic cluster.

Dark car mode only affects the turning on of the interior lights with the door.

Many PDs remove the door panel and unplug the harness from the door latch (or even worse, they cut the wire), so neither the light or the door chime comes on, at least for the front doors.

That's awesome. I'm definitely going to do that in the near future!

Yeah, my bad for thinking that Ford actually gave that option. You'd think they would as I'm sure it's something every department wants, and often does it themselves in a way that's anything but professional. I still wouldn't mind having a P71 that a chief drove and has only a 20K miles.

The easiest way on a second-gen is to turn the key forward to the ignition position. It'll ding three or four times, then beep once and turn off. Make sure the HVAC system is off and you're fine.
