I didn't even know that there are two different kinds of 1993 Explorers until I talked to a guy at Checker today. He said there is an early and a late 1993. How do I tell which one I have? Are there any differences?

Many parts will have a manufacture date sticker on them, especially interior trim peices. However, these sometimes are not a decent indication of build date.

Is there a specific part or system you're worried about or need to fix? I'd just deal with this question on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes build date isn't a decent indicator of equipment either since there are different plants and different lines in the same plant that may be doing things slightly different.

Actually, I just replaced my alternator trying to fix a squeaking sound. The squeaking sound didn't go away, which leads me to believe that the belt tensioner is starting to fail. According to the guy at Checker, he said there are 2 different kinds of belt tensioners.

what about the build date on the door label?? would that be able to tell you?? Alec, couldnt he jsut look to see if its an early date, or later date??

PEACE

good call, XplorerKid. I just checked my door label and it said 02/93. I guess that means mine is one of the early ones.

Actually, that is one of the later 1993's. Many 1993's were manufactured in 1992. Generally, most model years are actually manufactured the year before.

My 1994 Explorer Sport was manufactured in November of 1993. It's a kind of early 94.

I think the production run for 1994 Explorers ran something like July 93 to May 94 or something like that. There's a thread on here about that; posts by a user named "Crankcase" are generally what you're looking for, he knows a lot of specifics about 1st gen trucks.

...I don't know how you would be able to tell exactly what date Ford started putting a new tensioner design on 1993 Explorers.

The only differences I *knew of* between early 93's and later 93's is the fact that late 93's had EGR, and R-134a...
wait a minute...
maybe 94's were the first year with R-134a...nevermind
I'm gettin info overload...

Anyway I didn't know the tensioner changed...
That's news to me.

I had the same problem at Schucks on my F250. There were several tensioner pullies to choose from. Most would fit, they just looked different.

You might take a closer look at your serpentine belt. Mine was shiny on the smooth side and it was slipping on the smooth water pump pully. I got a new one from Schucks and it started squeaking within a week. I got a good one from NAPA and the squeak went away and has stayed gone for over a year.
