Hey what's up Fellas? I have a 92 XL. I am attempting to refill the refrigerant in my A/C system. Is there a diagram I can see to identify where to hook up the can to? I have (2) 19 oz R134 cans..

Please help..

Thank you

seeing as your truck is a 92, it probably had an r12 system... the system will need to be professionally evactuated, then you have to do an r134a conversion, then will be able to use the cans you have of r134a

Like Jim wrote your truck originally came with the R12 (freon) which is now unavailable in the US. Therefore you will need to convert your AC system into using R134 prior to using the cans you have...

How accurate is this? You know how many older cars still use R12. If true that really sucks.

Any idea how expensive this conversion will be? The A/C was serviced about 2/3 years ago while the vehicle was NOT in my possession. So at this point I can neither confirm nor deny if any conversion was completed or is currently necessary. How would I know if I need the conversion or if one has already been completed?

Thanks for your help..

You can still get the R12 in the states but not in a can. You have to take it to a licensed repair center. I called yesterday about it and it will cost me $3.25 /oz for a fill and $69 for a leak check + the $3.25 /oz to fill 'er up.

I jumped the low pressure switch last night to see if there was even a little left in it and it still blew out hot air.

How many oz will a '93 hold?

Sorry about the confusion. What I meant to convey is you can no longer buy R12 off the shelf; As Brett has indicated you need a specific license and/or certification to buy and work with R12. To help persuade people to make the switch to R134 they have highly taxed R12 and it is now $$$ compared with R134. As such Neutron should first get a leak and check before even attempting to fill up his system with the R12 cans he has (if they are 1lb cans they are worth $50+ ea). Otherwise they will just leak out in few days...

The AC capacity is 3lbs+ on the 1st gens.

The cans I purchased were (2) 19 oz R134 cans w/ nozzle, hose and gauges attached.. Any idea how I would know if I need the conversion or if one has already been completed?

There SHOULD be a sticker telling you the conversion was made ... also the connectors for charging are different for R12 and R134a .... if you have a screw on style hookup, it's R12, if it is a quick connect fitting like on you R134a cans it has been converted ...

the 1st Gen's use 32 oz of R-12. There is a thread in the Useful Threads Forum about converting a system, long but chock full of good info and links. And yes about $40-$50 a lb is about the going rate for R-12. I also posted a recent thread on an R-12 recharge (within the last week).

OK.. I determined today that my vehicle has NOT been converted. I purchased this item http://www.id-usa.com/product.asp?CID=38&PID=145 and (2) cans of http://www.id-usa.com/product.asp?CID=0&PID=92 . At this point I'm questioning the location of the service ports that need to be converted. Location of the converter, High vs Low and also I was told that my system may need to be flushed to assure there is no more R12 in my system.. The vehicle doesn't blow cold AT ALL and has been sitting in storage for 3 years..

So to prove just how ignorant I am on this subject..

1.) How do I locate the nozzles that need to be converted?

2.) What does the conversion process consist of exactly?

3.) Does my system need to be Professionally FLUSHED prior?

4.) And do the parts I purchased look familiar to any one? :)

Thanks fellas for helping.. Did I mention it was 112 degrees today?

not true 94s have the newer fluid

Ah, that was about the changeover date. Some 93 FORDS had it, and in some cases it was not until 94-1/2 or 95 . Thanks. Newtron however is a 92, he is def R-12. He should try using the search function.
