I'm in the middle of replacing the fuel pump on my 1 gen explorer (94 Sport). I have the tank dropped and all the connections off, but I have no idea how to remove the sending unit/fuel pump. The entire area is all rusted to hell and I have no idea what it's supposed to look like. All I know is there is some sort of retaining ring that needs to be removed.
If someone would be so kind as to let me know what I need to do to remove the assembly that would be great and also what parts I need to order from the dealer.
If you could post some pictures or diagrahms of the area that would be even better!

thanks everyone.

A step in the right direction would to be to get a haynes manual for your truck, I know it tells me how to in mine, hold on.....I think you "use a brass punch or wood dowel to tap the fuel pump module lock ring counter clockwise until its loose." Thats for the "early models"

yup there is a brass ring that screws off that holds it to the tank..... i have assisted my coworker in replacing like 5 fuel pumps in the past month on a multitude of vehicles nad this is what basically all of them had....

Are the pumps supposed to make a high pitched "eeeee" sound because mine is really annoying when I'm not in the truck and I'm wondering if thats normal (I hope so and not at the same time!) :P

explorers of the earlier generations had some loud pumps.... it means they are working.... for some reason, there isnt anything wrong with them, they are just loud....

OK, so if I undertand correctly all I need from the dealer will be a new brass ring? Mine tank is so rusted in that area I can't even see a ring. All I can make out is a series of tabs all the way around the outside. Does the ring screw down into the tank a little bit? I can't see anything that a ring might screw onto either. I guess lack pictures I'll just have to start beating on that area with a brass punch until the sending unit comes out .. :hammer:

Got it! After carefully chipping away and brushing crap off I figured out what its supposed to look like. Picked up the new lock ring today and will assemble tonight. Thanks to everyone who replied.:)

A Ford mechanic here said not to replace a fuel pump in a X unless you clean the tank first. He said that the Ford dealership that he worked for replaced a Ex's pump 3-4 times and they kept burning out. After cleaning the tank the next pump was ok!

aaarrggghhh
I finished the job. Now my fuel gauge only goes up to 3/4 full!!
I was very careful not to bend the float when installing the sending unit...and still it doesn't read correctly....aaaaarggghh!
