well if your explorer is 4wd and not all-wheel drive there is a selector on the dash, should read 4x4 auto, 4hi, 4lo. 4hi can be selected while driving 'on the fly' under speeds of 45mph. 4lo can only be engaged, disengaged with the vehicle in stopped and in neutral.

if you need more info look in the 'transmission, differentials' forum

is there a switch beside the radio for 4wd ?
what does it say ?
that will tell us what it is, if it's awd or not,,

to go in low range, not only do you have to be in neutral, but your brake must be depressed.

if its awd.. its always awd, a constant front and rear torque split, it cannot be put into 4wd or 2wd. the transfer case is permanently engaged, the front diff is always turning. there are some good stickies in the 'transmission, differentials' forum with info on the different driveline types/

What engine do you have? If it's a 5.0, it's AWD and as Four0Sport said, you have no control over it.

yea its the 5.0 v8... that sucks, oh well

If you want to get into modifying you can put an F-150 transfer case into your truck which would make it a true 4wd so you could select between 2wd/4hi/4low.

Well, you can always go the 4406 route. It's actually not that bad a deal and can be done fairly inexpensively if you do your homework when shopping. I think I have about $350 in my conversion...and that includes going through the transfer case and installing all new bearings, seals, and chain. I just bought it all right. (that doesn't include a shifter though...I still haven't done anything with that.) If you want to spend more money, you can buy an adapter kit and install an electric version that retains the big fuel tank. But that involves a complete trans tear down...so it's not near as easy or for those who aren't comfortable around the inside of an automatic transmission. I really wish I had gone that route since I had everything but the adapter kit and I rebuilt my trans.

AWD doesnt suck! ive taken my awd explorer plenty of places that i take my 4wd explorer. awd is great in the snow, i have yet to get stuck with my awd explorer. ive always had good tires on it, and havnt tried to exceed its capability. but there are plenty of guys who wheel with awd, its just not 'as' capable as a true 4wd.

im not gonna change it, i was just wondering. its my first car so i dont want to do anything crazy
