I have an '02 V8 with the 5-speed auto with 83000 on it. the tranny seems to be acting funny throught the first couple of gears. About 3rd on up seems fine. When you accelerate swiftly it feels like it wants to slip some. Could it just need a fluid and filter change or is this what they seem to do when they are about to go out? I have heard these have alot of issues and was wondering if anyone could fill me in on this.

Sounds similar to the problem I was having--ended up being the trans solenoids. They first tried to just flash the computer, but that didn't solve the problem, so the solenoids had to be replaced. My mileage is about 70K, and I had this done less than a month ago.

I posted something and then realized you said 5 speed. Is 2002 when the 5R100 made it's debut behind the V-8's ?

[I admit to knowing NOTHING about the 4R100/5R100 - and so cannot be much help - except that it was redesigned out of the FORD E4OD transmission, and in the later versions at least, actually was the first FORD 6 speed transmission. It has 3 planetaries I believe and 2 mechanical diodes and is a strong bull. (6 forward gears but only uses 5 depending on temp I believe)]
