that happened to me for a different reason when i bought my 97 lol. new guy at that shop that services the vehicles at the dealership i bought my explorer at forgot the axle nut. i made it 15 miles before i was passed by my own wheel lol. so it started off bad but we kept it for a number of years without any real further issues before selling it due to rust.

Did you remove the axle then lost the wheel? If so that's why, it holds the bearing together.
