I just wondered how much the normal articulation is for a stock Explorer. Yesterday a guage buzzed on that said "Check Air Ride System", so I locked into 4 lo and watched the shocks and listened to everything and nothing was out of the ordinary, worked fine. So while it had the extra clearance on it I drove it up on a tire ramp for like lawnmowers and stuff, about a foot high. Once I got it up there I got out and looked and my jaw dropped open...I couldnt believe how much it flexed! I reckon it was a good 15-20 inches from the top of the tire to the top of the wheelwell. I guess having that lift from the air ride gives it more articulation huh? I need to get some pictures, I thought it was great. Just had to let ya all know,

The back end of my stocker flexes fairly well. The best pic I have is this one: http://home.att.net/~explorer4x4/Imog2.jpg Look at the back wheel, it was almost maxed out, it did not have much traction. The front also flexes good but my sway bars were attached so I am sure it could go a little more. I might take a picture of it flexing sometime soon in my driveway probably next week when I have to get the ramps out for changing the oil.

RuMan, Don't look now...but someone is hitching a free ride on your back bumper LOL

I read that the RTI is about 430 for a totally stock Explorer(91-94), but I don't remember where I saw the figure from.

how

I wonder if the stock suspension can bottom out on the wheelwells? (swaybars disconnected) I'd be interested to find out what it takes to make it happen..just the warrior shackles, or new leafs and springs all around...

Hey, the 400's cant be that bad. I have a copy of 4Wheeler here with the Top Truck Challenge and this guy has some kind of vehicle he built with a plain jane lift and 44" Swamper TSL's, and he only ramped a 647. I thought that was pretty bad for such a large vehicle. I guess smaller tires might help on an RTI? A Jeeper ramped 1,035 with 35" Boggers, but he had swivel shackles and more lift components.

The explorer is a great stock 4x4. I know people love to bash it....but I've got mine into several places where jeepers can only dream of. All this with the air on. :)

There are several things that a stocker can do to improve with the biggest being the sway bars. When off-road....get rid of them. On the newer explorers you have the 3rd shock to loose too. If you can get some shackles these help too. The biggest thing sometimes is to keep going if you hear a rub. I've had to paint over my frame a few times to hide the tire rub.
